Obituary of Glenn Wiseman

WISEMAN - Glenn Wiseman was born on June 29, 1934, at Saltcoats Hospital. He grew up and worked on his family’s small farm located near Saltcoats. Glenn attended Crescent School from Grades 1 to 8 and then finished his Grades 9 and 10 by correspondence due to family duties. He was active in the Yorkton and Saltcoats 4-H Calf and Cattle Show from 1946 to 1950. Glenn always said he learned many valuable lessons from 4-H beyond cattle management, including discipline, working together for a common cause, public speaking, and getting along in life with other people.

Glenn started working as a grain buyer at the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in the fall of 1956 at Yorkton. Grain buying was hard work, dusty, and on a much smaller scale than it is now with hand-written cash tickets, bags, sleighs and wagon loads of grain, no adding machines and lots of box car coopering to get the cars ready for shipment.

In 1957, Glenn was sent on an errand to the Yorkton MacLeod’s store and there he met a lovely and helpful Nellie Chipuer who was working as a clerk at the store. After a few years of dating, they wed in 1957, and moved to Tadmore and started their life together in the friendly town of Tadmore. Here is where both daughters, Lorraine and Kelleen, were born.

Glenn worked with the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool for 36 years, managing elevators at Tonkin, Tadmore, Springside, and Theodore. In 1986 Glenn moved back to Yorkton to a bigger, modern and expanded elevator and job role, that included several helpers, farm services, computer technology, and semi-truck grain loads.  Glenn gained membership in the 1 Million Bushel Club in 1986 –a goal of which he was very proud! In 1992, he retired from Saskatchewan Wheat Pool.

Glenn was a committed volunteer and builder of community. In his early years, he was involved in curling bonspiels, supporting local golf tournaments, coaching girls’ softball, and volunteering at church and school pancake and fundraising events. And in later years after retirement, he made the time to contribute his time to be part of the boards and take on major organizing roles in Yorkton Genealogy Society, Knights of Columbus, Housing Authority, St. Gerards, and of course as treasurer to his beloved Brick Mill Heritage Society!

Family travels started early with long car trips to the Rocky Mountains, BC and Alberta National Parks, Vancouver Island, Quebec City, Montreal, and Toronto – all big trips to plan and drive for he and Nellie and all without GPS or the Internet! In later years, Glenn had the good fortune to travel the world on his own and with family to New Zealand, Australia, Branson, Alaska, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Arizona, Maritime, Newfoundland, South America, Mexico, and Cayman Islands - of course many trips to Vancouver!

Glenn was a collector of coins, sport cards, stamps, even collecting some of the rare collector cards of Wayne Gretsky and Gordie Howe. He enjoyed the collecting, organizing and connecting with other collectors at local shows – and he made sure his grandchildren were given the update of his latest additions every time they visited!

After celebrating his 90th birthday on June 29th -with three parties and many cards and videos - his health challenges escalated, and he was moved to the Hospice at Glengarda. Glenn passed away peacefully on July 27.

Glenn was predeceased by his wife Nellie, his parents, his brother, Terry, and sister, Bev. Glenn leaves to celebrate his life his two daughters Lorraine (Wayne) and Kelleen (James), grandchildren Mitchell (Jamie), Kenton (Katherine), Laura (Sesqui) and Kelsey (Taylor), and great grandchildren, Benjamin and Claire (Kenton’s and Katherine’s children). In addition, he leaves his two sisters, Jean and Elaine (Brian), and his nieces and nephews from the Chipuer and Wiseman families.

The Funeral Service was held on August 1, 2024 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre, Yorkton, SK with Crystal Bailey, certified celebrant, officiating.  The musical selections were ‘The Lord Has Been Good to Me’ by Alabama, ‘Danny Boy’ sung by Wendi Stumborg with accompanist Shani Apland and ‘Amazing Grace’ by Piper Erin Allary. The Scripture was read by Jim Vercamnen. Tributes and Words of Remembrance were shared by Kelleen Wiseman and Mitchell & Kenton Lysak. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Kenton Lysak, Mitchell Lysak, Laura Vercamnen, Blair Harris, Garry Gawryliuk and Sandy Reed serving as pallbearers. Memorial donations may be made to the Yorkton Brick Mill Heritage Society https://yorktonflourmill.ca/donate-to-the-campaign-1 (Box 1062 Yorkton, Sk S3N 3X2) as gifts of remembrance.
