Obituary of Sophie Pacholko
Sophie Pacholko was born on December 10, 1926 in the Hubbard District. The third child and first daughter of Metro and Margaret Sass.
Sophie went to Stanislaw and Greenbush schools but at an early age stayed home to help with the growing family of 15 children. She was hired by the neighbours in the area as a housekeeper and tended to the animals and household chores. She married Peter Pacholko on November 2, 1952 and they farmed on the Pacholko homestead 8 miles west of Willowbrook. Life on the farm was hard. 12-18 cows were milked by hand twice a day. Taking care of the pigs, chickens, ducks, geese and growing a huge garden then canning it all kept her very busy. Sundays were reserved for going to church and dinner for the family or friends who stopped in. Sophie was a great cook and no one ever left her table hungry. Peter's failing health forced them to sell the farm in 1979 and the move to Melville was made. Peter died in August 1981, which left her devastated but with the help of family and the grandchildren that came along life became less lonely for her. She never missed a chance to help her sisters, brothers or children if the need arose and became everyone's "Baba" that was fortunate enough to know her. She always had homemade treats in her freezer, and she rarely let her grandchildren, or their friends, leave her house without a container full to take home.
She loved gardening and growing flowers, which she did until she was 91, crocheting, feeding the birds, and spending time with family.
Sophie wanted to stay in her own home as long as she could and with the help of her daughter Elaine did just that until she was hospitalized in June of this year.
It is with great sadness that the family mourns the loss of Sophie on Saturday July 20th, 2019 at the age of 92 at St. Paul Lutheran Home.
