Obituary of Nellie Elfenbaum
ELFENBAUM - Nellie Elfenbaum of Ituna passed away peacefully on July 25, 2019 at St. Anne's Home. She was 82 years of age.
Nellie was born on May 31, 1937 at the family farm by Ituna to Mike and Mary (Jaremicki) Ozembloski. She was the 4th born of the 11 children Mike and Mary had.
Nellie went to Spondon School which was a 1 ½ mile walk from the farm. She completed grade 8 which was the highest grade offered at the time.
After completing school, Nellie went to work for Ed and Rose Braden on their farm. Her next job was as a cook for some of the construction camps that were building the highway by Ituna. When that job finished Nellie went with her older
sister Olga to Calgary where they found work in the laundry department of a hospital.
Nellie returned to the family farm in the late 50's. She found a job working for Abraham and Dora Elfenbaum who farmed 7 miles (11 km) south of the family farm. While working for the Elfenbaum's she met Jack their oldest son and on January 11, 1963 Nellie became Mrs. Nellie Elfenbaum later that year they had their only child a son Morris. Nellie continued to work and live on the farm until 1997 when she moved to Ituna.
Nellie started to lose her sight in 1966 and spent the next 4 years going from one clinic or hospital to another as they were trying to find out why she was losing her sight. They identified the problem at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN.
Unfortunately, they were not able to fix the problem but they were able to stop any further loss of sight and Nellie was declared legally blind. Nellie bought a house in Ituna in 1997 and lived there until 2004 when she moved into the low rentals in north Ituna. Her final move was to St. Anne's in 2017.
Nellie is predeceased by her brother's Russell, Leonard, Orest and her sister's Olga and Lee as well as her nephews, Stacy and Larry and her best animal friend Bobby (pictured on the front). She is survived by her son, Morris (Gizella) and brother's Barney (Marie), Adolf (Patricia), and Billy (Nel) as well as her sister's Helen (Tony) and Pauline. There is also nephew's Kim, and Craig as well as her niece Beryl.
