Obituary of George Gerald Gulash
George Gerald Gulash of Melville, Saskatchewan passed away after a brief illness on January 2, 2021, with his best friend and soul mate June by his side.
George was born April 7, 1937, at the family homestead, in the RM of Cana, the sixth of nine children to George and Helen (Barsi) Gulash. George attended school at Happy Home Country School in the Waldron District. George's love for land led him to many years of farming with his brother, Alfred, until they sold the farm, in 2001. George initially discovered his joy of travelling through various trips, including Vancouver with family and Las Vegas with friends.
In 1988, George purchased a house on Manitoba Street, in Melville. Fifteen years later and one hundred and forty-nine steps from his doorstep, George met the love of his life, June Rieger. George and June shared a love of travel, exploring Las Vegas, Arizona, Eastern Canada, Calgary, and numerous day trips around the country to check crops, visit family or just enjoy the many colours of the seasons.
June's family welcomed George with open arms, and made George a big part of their lives. George cared deeply for June's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George was a quiet, gentle, loving man with a heart of gold. George was proud of the grandchildren and held a special honour and title of ‘Papa George', affectionately given to him by the great-grandchildren.
George was compassionate, thoughtful and good-natured. He held a special bond with his nieces and nephews. He talked highly of their achievements, took an interest in their work and hobbies, phoned just to check-in and enjoyed the exchange of jokes. This same love extended to the next generation.
George will be lovingly remembered by: his spouse June; June's sons, Jason Rieger of Melville, SK; Mark (Linda) Rieger of Melville, SK, and their children and grand children, June's daughter, Colleen (Bill) Warrellow and their children of Calgary, AB. He will be also deeply missed by his siblings: Elsie Lueck (Earl Chesney) of Indian Head, SK; Mitzi Cockreham of Portland, Oregon, USA; Alfred Gulash of Regina, SK; and June's sister, Dianne (George) Favel; along with numerous nieces and nephews; and his coffee row friends.
George was predeceased by: his parents, George and Helen (Barsi) Gulash; his siblings, Henry (Marion) Gulash; Eileen (Alfred) Almasi; Eleanor (Don) Moyle; Gladys (Don) Soderquist; Betty (Clarence) Stich; his brother-in-laws, Harold Lueck and Dennis Cochreham; his sister-in-law, Rene Gulash; along with two nephews and a niece.
