Obituary of Helen Alice Fylyshtan

On a bright sunny May day a bundle of joy was dropped off at a two room log cabin on the bank of Assiniboine River. The messenger was grandpa Hrywkiw. The message was that a little girl was born to Mike and Mary Hrywkiw. The oldest grandchild of Alex and Helen Hrywkiw. Thus the child was proudly named after her grandmother. All this took place on May 18, 1929. After a year the family moved to a larger house in the Forest Hill District south of Tadmore. At school age she registered at Forest Hill School and began her formal elementary education and took grade nine and ten by correspondence. For grades eleven and twelve she registered at Sacred Heart Academy in Yorkton. These were her most memorable years. After graduation in 1947 she enrolled in Moose Jaw Teachers Collegiate. After graduation from Teachers Collegiate in 1948 at the age of 19 she began her teaching career at Forest Hill School for the next eight years. During the years at Forest Hill her class produced some of the finest Christmas concerts. Also, her class took part in the Better Speech Competitions in the Canora School Division. One year her school took first place in all divisions. During her teaching years at Forest Hill she met John and got married in 1950. Due to a low school enrolment at Forest School the school was closed. Canora School Division opened a new school district at Amsterdam Saskatchewan. Helen began teaching there for the next five years. In 1953 she was accepted as a grade three teacher in the Canora Junior Elementary School. On August 27, 1964 a son Michael John was born to John and Helen. The next four years were devoted to Michael. In 1968 she resumed teaching at Canora. In 1987 she retired from teaching after thirty five years of teaching. During the teaching years through correspondence, summer school and night classes she attained her two University Degrees B.A. and B.Ed. and a Professional Teaching Certificate. In 1988 she accepted a teaching position at Rankin Inlet, N.W.T. teaching a grade four class. In 1996 she retired the second time. She has been a member of the U.C.W.L. for a number of years. She is predeceased by her husband John, parents Mike and Mary, sister Lucile and brother Michael. She is survived by her son Michael (Tracey), grandchildren Jessica (Alex), Rebecca and Laura, extended grandchildren Kaitlynn (Drew), Elizabeth (Mike), Jonathan and Cassaundra and her sister Sonia Fullawka.
