Obituary of David Edward Windysh

David Edward Windysh was born in Ituna Saskatchewan on Sept 27, 1964 to his parents Edward and Jean (Tataryn) Windysh and his two older sisters Wilma and Winnie. Ed and Jean soon discovered that David was special and knew their lives were never going to be the same. They were told David had Down's Syndrome when he was six months old. David was a very sick baby and spent much of his infancy and childhood in hospitals. Ed and Jean were advised by medical professionals that David should be institutionalized. After a tour of the Valley View Centre in Moose Jaw, Ed and Jean knew that sending David away was not an option. They knew he belonged at home with his family. At ten years old, David began attending classes at Central School in Melville. David gained independence, made friends, and learned skills such as writing his name. David spent many days outside with his father helping with chores and learning about farming. With his companions Mac and Lacey, his two favorite dogs, David took on the most dangerous chickens, geese and turkeys. David soon got the reputation as being the brave one. He earned the role of guard as he was quite skilled at protecting his sisters from chickens that would peck. David spent a lot of his time playing catch and ring-toss, and mastering yo-yo and paddleball tricks. When David turned 21, he started working at the Rail City Industry's workshop in Melville. David and a group from Ituna commuted to work there every day. Here he helped build a variety of wood projects. He made many friends at Rail City that he kept his entire life. In 1995, Deer Park Villa opened the Ituna Ability Centre, a vocational opportunity for people experiencing disability. David began attending this facility and helped sort paper and flatten cans for recycling. David enjoyed working in Ituna and made many special bonds with his friends and the Deer Park employees. When he turned 40, he decided that it was time to spread his wings and wanted to move away from home. He became a resident of Villa 3 in 2006. David made an impression on everyone he encountered. He was friendly, caring and full of love. David enjoyed having coffee with his friends and playing board games and memory. He had deep rooted interests that he insisted all staff and other participants appreciate as much as he did. The Villa 3 boys were well-familiarized with every episode of Bonanza and Hee-Haw, the GX94 Saturday Night Dance Party, and knew just about every classic country song by heart. David was the dancer of Deer Park Villa. He was the first to get on the floor for a polka or waltz. David was an outlaw at heart. He had a love for Harley Davidsons and rodeos and had all the t-shirts to prove it. He will be remembered as being passionate and particular... "just like a Windysh. He was the son of his father." David lived a full life and was able to experience many opportunities and accomplished countless goals. His health began to decline only a few short months before his passing and he was surrounded by support and care to the very end. He left us on June 20th, 2021 at the age of 56. We all take comfort in the thought that David was once again able to spend Father's Day with his dad. David was predeceased by his father, Edward Windysh; his grandparents, John & Mary Windysh, and Joe & Mary Tataryn; his aunts and uncles: Walter Tataryn, Jean (Bill) Millford, Helen (Henry) Korchinski, Eleanor (Jim) McTurk, Josephine (Joe) Pongracz, and Mary (Blake) Rees. Mourning his passing are his mother, Jean Windysh; his sisters, Wilma (Dave) Hrenyk and Winnie (Tom) Avant; his aunt, Edna (Merrill) Wright; his nieces and nephews: Ruth Elaschuk (Aaron Tank) and children Jaden, Ariana, and Brinley: Sally Avant; Daniel (Amber) Hrenyk and children Taylor, Logan, and Sophie; Ross Avant; Jeanette (David) Peterson and son David; Jesse (Mike) Avant; and Jonathan Hrenyk; the many participants and staff at Deer Park Villa Inc; as well as numerous extended family and his many friends. Heaven's Very Special Child A meeting was held quite far from earth "It's time again for another birth, The Angels said to the Lord above, "This dear child will need much love." His progress on Earth may be quite slow Accomplishments great, he may not show And he will require some extra care From the folks he meets on the Earth down there. He may never run, nor laugh, nor play His thoughts may seem odd and far away In various ways, he won't adapt And be always known as handicapped. So Lord, please find some parents-do Who'll do this work as unto You. They'll not understand it right away The different role you'll have them play But with this dear child sent from above Comes strength, more faith, and richer love And soon they'll know the privilege given To care for this gift that's straight from Heaven This precious young charge, so sweet and mild, Will always remain Your special child.
