Obituary of Stuart Greenstein
Stuart Wilfred Greenstein was born September 3, 1931 to Joseph and Katherine (MacDougal) Greenstein at the Queen Victoria Hospital in Yorkton Saskatchewan. He was raised on the family farm with his three older siblings, Meldrum, Josephine, and Frances. Tragedy struck the family when Stuart was nine years old and his mother died; three years later his father passed away leaving Meldrum and Josephine taking care of the younger children.
Stuart received his education at Wallace School, and later joined his brother in the farming operation. He married Barbara Anna Propp on October 11, 1953. They raised two daughters, Roberta and Valerie. Stuart and Barb took great pride in their daughters, supported all of their activities, and made sure they got a good education. Together, the family resided on the beautiful Greenstein farm, working hard sowing their mixed grains, raising pigs, chickens, and milking cows. Stuart loved to pick berries (something he often did with his grandchildren), and always picked the cucumbers - just so nobody else would disturb the plants. Aside from all the busy and hard work on the farm, Stuart also worked for Raymond Bilous – building and repairing elevators for many years. Life was busy, but time was always made to partake in many fishing trips – something that he continued to enjoy in his many years spent here with us.
Throughout all his blessings in life, Stuart was especially proud of his five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He always was so happy to see them, and looked forward to all their visits. When the first great-grandchild (Ethan) was born, Stuart was given the title GG (Gentle Giant).
Stuart was very involved in Rhein’s Christ Lutheran Church, serving as Church Counsellor and Cemetery Overseer for many years. He was an active member of the community becoming a charter member of the Rhein Lions Club. He loved playing baseball, broomball, curling, and he of course coached the Blue Jays from his chair almost every game played. A huge highlight of his retirement was when him and Barbara flew to Edmonton last summer, to attend their oldest great grandson Ethan’s wedding. It was the first time he flew anywhere, and he said it was so fast, and that he would love do it again.
Stuart was predeceased by his parents; siblings, Meldrum, Josephine (Wilfred Betz) and Frances (Walter Rhinas), and daughter Valerie Kyba.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Barbara, daughter Roberta (Ross) Lindenbach, grandchildren Rhonda (Clinton) Gibson, Erin (Chad) Liebrecht, Brent (Kristi) Lindenbach, and Corey and Luke Kyba. His great grandchildren Ethan (Ashley), Payton, Isabella, Nixon Gibson, Delanie, Noah, and Oliver Liebrecht, Emma and Natalie Lindenbach. Son-in-law Orest Kyba, sister-in-laws Audrey (Lawrence) Herman, Jenny Greenstein, and many nieces and nephews.
“When you opened your eyes this morning, God had already seen your day unfold. He has tucked his love into every moment and tenderly wrapped it with the quiet strength your heart would need.”
He will be greatly missed by all.
