The family of Tony Matsalla of Yorkton, beloved husband of Iris Matsalla sadly announce his passing on Saturday, August 10, 2024. Tony was 75 years of age.
Tony was born to John and Josephine Matsalla from Dobrowody District of Rama, Saskatchewan.
He was the youngest of 8 children. As a young man, he worked north in the lumber camps in Saskatchewan. After a few years he moved to Yorkton and started work at Morris Rodweeder in January of 1973. He worked as a welder, machinist and testing of machinery for farming.
On May 5, 1973 he married Iris Chocorlan and became a father to three young girls Mavis, April and Cheryl. In 1975, Douglas was born and in 1978, Elizabeth followed to complete the family. Tony’s family was his pride and joy and family gatherings were so important to him.
Tony loved spending time with his friends. He also spent his free time assisting with various sports teams and spent hours watching all of his favourite teams on tv. He was a handy man who had many skills and was always willing to help others who needed a hand.
Tony retired at the age of 58 from Morris and took his small engine repair course, which started Tony’s Small Engine Repair. He also cultivated gardens for people in Yorkton and did some machining in his garage.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 51 years Iris; his five children Mavis Lutz and partner Susan, April and Rick Stadnek (Jonathan & Anna), Cheryl and partner Cary (Lauren), Douglas Matsalla and partner Lisa (Carter & Emma) and Elizabeth and Steve Schmidt (Bennet, Kade and Ryden); sisters: Lena Knash, Mary Matsalla, Bernice Chopty and sister-in-law Julia Matsalla. He is also survived by his many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Tony was predeceased by his father John and mother Josephine; brothers Edward, Henry, Bernard and a sister Elizabeth in infancy; and his dear daughter in law Leanne.
The Memorial Service was held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Doreen Day, Certified Celebrant officiating.Mavis Lutz shared words of remembrance. The urn bearers were Doug and Elizabeth. Honourary pallbearers are Tony’s many nieces and nephews. Uncle Tony was so special to all of them.
