Obituary of Helen Ziglo
Mrs. Helen Ziglo of Yorkton, passed away peacefully at the Foam Lake Jubilee Home on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the age of 89, one month before her 90th birthday. She was the beloved wife of Mr. Anthony (Tony) Ziglo.
Helen was born on May 12, 1934 in the Plainview District of Saskatchewan to Steve and Margaret Horgas. She was raised on the family farm and received her education at the Maxwalton and Plainview schools. On August 23, 1958 Helen married Tony in Yorkton. They were married for almost 66 years. Helen worked as a cook at the Broadway Cafe, the Yorkton Hotel and Anderson Lodge. Helen and Tony enjoyed visiting and playing cards with their friends. They also travelled to several different places such as California, Arizona, Hawaii, Missouri, Mexico, and British Columbia, as well as many trips to Alberta.
Helen was passionate about cooking. Even after she retired, she would help with cooking for events at Westview United Church, including funerals and fall suppers. In addition to cooking, Helen also loved gardening. The annual fall harvest from Tony and Helen’s garden led to canning vegetables, making jams, cooking pies, and making her well-known jam jam cookies.
Helen was a member of and active in the Army, Navy and Airforce Veterans Auxiliary; Westview United Church; and the Yorkton Gun Club.
Helen is survived by her loving husband Tony, two sisters, Elizabeth Lemchuk (Frank – predeceased) of Yorkton and Ada Toth (Robert – predeceased) of Lethbridge; sister-in-law Esther Horgas (Bert – predeceased) of Yorkton; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Steve and Margaret; three brothers, William (infancy), Harold, and Bert; her nieces Beverley Bower and Janice Mehling, and her nephew, Richard Horgas.
The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, April 20, 2024 from Westview United Church, Yorkton, Saskatchewan with Rev. Deborah Smith officiating. Beaty Beaubier delivered the eulogy. Tenley Bower and Debbie Stankievech read scripture. Accompanist Sharon Litvanyi led the congregation in the hymns. The honorary urn bearers are all of Helen’s loving family, friends and neighbours. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Ken Horgas serving as urn bearer.
Memorial donations in Helen’s memory may be made to a Charity of One’s Choice as gifts of remembrance.
