Irene Ethel Mary Hrushka (nee Rose) was born January 4th, 1934 in Maloneck school district 12 miles north of Pelly, SK, a daughter of Sebra and Gladys (nee Bell) Rose. Irene completed school in Pelly while living with her sister Elizabeth and then worked at Pelly CO-OP. She then moved to Kamsack and worked at a furniture store. She married Ranald Hrushka, a childhood friend from Maybridge school district (also north of Pelly) on August 2nd 1956. Irene and Ranald lived in Winnipeg where they had two children, Leila and Douglas. Irene worked at many different retail stores between 1956 and 1964 to help support her family. Irene and Ranald enjoyed visiting other family members in Winnipeg while raising their kids. They often drove 6 hrs back to their family farms for Christmas and family gatherings. In 1967, Ranald moved their family to Churchbridge and built a Husky Service Station where Irene did the books until 1991, when it was sold.
Irene always grew a large garden to stock the home cellar. She enjoyed many weekend meetings with family for picnics, fishing and camping at Madge Lake and Lake of the Prairies. Irene actively volunteered with the Churchbridge Minor Sports, flipping burgers during hockey games and working at the outdoor kitchens during baseball games. She volunteered with the Churchbridge Lioness, ACW Anglican Women, Churchbridge Horticultural Club and had great fun taking part in baking contests, winning a few along the way. She also loved playing piano for the Rhythm Rockets at local halls and senior centres. Her home was open to family, friends and any stranded travellers who needed a bowl of homemade soup while Ranald fixed their cars at the service station. She always had a smile and a loving, caring heart.
Irene was called to our Lord Jesus Christ on March 10th 2024, at the age of 90 years. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Ranald and her brothers Allan Rose and Leonard Rose. She will be sadly missed by her daughter Leila (Marc) Steenhuisen of Sherwood Park AB; son Douglas (Margaret) Hrushka of Yorkton, grandchildren: John Hrushka (Moss Hermanson), Kristy Hrushka, Joe Lavoie and Caroline (Rob) Chamulke with their sons Jaxon and Nicko.
