I have known Joyce and Bill for a long time through Nature Saskatchewan and the Yorkton Natural History Society and because they were god friends of my parents, Warren and Elinor Hjertaas, both deceased.
Joyce published a great article in the fall issue of Folklore titled Creating Memories about Bill's sand collection. I just wrote a card to Joyce saying how much I enjoyed the article and then, in l trying to look up her address, discovered the obituary. As expected from Joyce, it was a very well written article.
I am sad to learn of her passing but am happy for her freedom.

Sadly, I just learned of Joyce's passing today.
As many people know, Joyce and Bill were stalwarts and very active members of both the Saskatchewan Natural History Society (later Nature Saskatchewan), as well as its local branch in Yorkton.
They also contributed many fine articles to the Society's publication 'Blue Jay' over the years, which I always enjoyed reading.
We later became "pen pals" on the old SaskBirder chat line, where they seemed to enjoy my 'birding from the train' stories.
Sadly, we never did meet in person, but I felt as if I knew Joyce and Bill.
Their long and productive lives involving nature -- especially the Bluebird trail -- are a testament to their legacy.
May they both rest in peace...
Sincerely,
Guy and Sandra Wapple,
Saskatoon.

Rest in peace, Joyce. You were a strong supporter of Good Spirit Lake area and I loved it. You always had a story to tell when
I came to pick up the mail and at times I was lucky to be graced with a gratis wrapped bubble gum or candy. You gave me books and magazines to read, and for that I was so grateful. Your husband Bill was a classmate of mine and we were always challenging each other to be top of the class (of two). We took turns and there was always a laugh at the outcome.
I still have the book you wrote Joyce. Now it will be my treasure. Thank you and again, rest in Peace.

Sending deepest condolences the family. As children we were fortunate to call her “Auntie Joyce” . We spent many hours sweeping her store front at the lake just to earn an ice cream. On behalf of all the Switzer (Ed & Min) kids thanks Auntie Joyce for always treating us like one of your own. Her wisdom, beautiful laugh will always be remembered

Joyce was a lovely lady and a fountain of knowledge, especially on the sand dunes and history of Good Spirit Lake. As a direct descendent of Donald Gunn she and husband Bill were keepers of the sand dunes and the history and secrets that lie within. I so enjoyed walking the dunes with her and hearing the stories of her grandpas trading post, Gunn's beach and all the excitement that surrounded that area during those times. She was an excellent story teller as her writings attest and so glad she left behind many of the stories of the area. She is with Bill again, walking the dunes :)

Joyce was a lovely lady; I enjoyed our visits at the RM. Joyce is totally responsible for my now lifelong journey into researching my family genealogy. A good life lived...
