Mary Herman was born October 22, 1936 to Dennis and Mary (Balaberda) Smart on the family farm north of Fenwood. She received her education in the Maxwelton School District. After finishing school, she remained on the farm to help her parents. In 1955 she moved to and worked in Melville and that is where she met Ronald Herman.

They were married in 1963 and farmed on Ron’s home place located in the Duff District. The union was blessed with two sons.

Mary enjoyed life on the farm and every aspect of the outside and inside work as she lovingly took care of her family. After her sons were grown up, she provided childcare to local families around Duff and these children held a special place in her heart. Her greatest joy was being with her grandchildren and took every opportunity to make that happen giving lots of wonderful memories for her grandsons.

Mary enjoyed getting together with relatives, friends, and neighbors. In 2014 she moved to Melville and, because she did not drive, this gave her more independence to do these things that she loved.

In April of this year, Mary moved to St. Paul Lutheran Home and was a resident there until her passing, December 22, 2023. Her family wants to thank all the staff for the wonderful care and comfort giving mom a place to call home in her last months of life.

Mary was predeceased by parents, Dennis and Mary; in-laws, Jacob and Louise; husband, Ronald; sisters, Nellie and Adeline; brothers, Leonard, John, and Willie; brothers-in-law, Sam, Tony, Emil, Cameron, Ronald, and Donald; sister-in-law, Marian; and two nephews.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Daren (Dorothy) and Rodger; grandchildren, Brett (Amber) and Tyler; sisters, Julia and Mabel; brother-in-law, Bill; sisters-in-law, Eileen, Irene, and Audrey; along with nieces and nephews.
