Obituary of Richard John Tataryn
TATARYN – Richard Tataryn of the Wroxton district, beloved brother of Karen Rubletz passed away on October 23, 2023 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 61 years of age.
Richard John Tataryn was born on April 17, 1962 in Regina, SK. He was adopted by his parents, Andrew and Elsie Tataryn and was raised on the family farm north of Wroxton, SK. He attended Assiniboine and Junior High Schools in Kamsack, SK.
Rick played ball with the Brandon Bandits. He drove mini bikes, quads and skidoo with his friends. He attended many community events at Brandon School and at the Wroxton Hall, skating and curling rink.
School was not Ricky’s thing, so he accompanied some friends to Fort McMurray, AB and operated a cat for Suncore for a couple years. Rick returned to the farm and worked with his brother-in-law, Gorden Rubletz, erecting cattle shelters and shops.
Ricky’s health problems started at age of 18 when he was diagnosed with Crohn’s and Ankylosing Spondylitis resulting in the fusing of his neck and tailbone. He broke his back and was paralyzed in 2014. Throughout all his setbacks he beat the odds by sheer determination and was farming his land until his passing. He may have been frail for years, but was stronger than anyone in comparison.
Ricky had such a connection with kids. He spent countless hours with his sister Karen’s children. He took Jasmine and Jorden with him doing chores, riding in the combine and tractor, giving them Quad rides, shooting gophers, tobogganing and spoiling them with treats. He then connected with the neighborhood children, especially Zach & Liam and his great nieces and nephews, Legaci, Librehdi, Rekkhi and Ledger as they came along. He always had a stock of treats and money in case kids came. Hence, he came to be known as “Uncle Ricky” to all kids.
He had extensive love for cats, having some in the house and “umpteen” outside and doted on them. Ricky’s place was open house daily to all his friends and neighbors whom he loved as family. They cared for him and came to help him regularly. This year, along with Gorden and Marshall they completed his harvest and used their equipment and aeration bins when he was hospitalized. He got to see the video of it being finished. He was also told that he had a great yield for the last crop he seeded on his land.
Rick will be lovingly remembered as a quiet, gentle man with a generous and tender heart.
Rick was predeceased by his grandparents, Matthew & Maria Tataryn and Wasyl & Anna Krochak and his parents, Andrew & Elsie Tataryn.
Rick’s memory will be cherished by his sister Karen along with her husband Gorden Rubletz of Wroxton, SK; his niece Jasmine and her husband Marshall Nagy of Yorkton, SK; his nephew Jorden Rubletz of Churchbridge, SK; his beloved great nieces and nephews, Legaci, Librehdi & Ledger Nagy and Rekkhi Rubletz, as well as numerous cousins.
Prayers were held on Sunday, October 29, 2023 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. A Celebration of Life was held on Monday, October 30, 2023 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Father Basil Malowany officiating. The responses were led by Lorne Stechyshyn and the Funeral Choir. The eulogy and tribute were shared by Karen Rubletz, Jasmine Nagy and Jorden Rubletz. The cross bearer was Librehdi Nagy. The interment followed in the Family plot in the Garden of St. Luke at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Gorden Rubletz, Marshall Nagy, Jorden Rubletz, Legaci Nagy, Dave Tataryn and Trent Adam serving as the casket bearers.
