Obituary of Alex Solomon

SOLOMON - Mr. Alex Solomon of Yorkton entered eternal rest on Sunday, May 4th, 2008 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre with his family at his side. He was 86 years of age. Alex was born on March 15, 1922 on the family farm in the Parkerview district; a son of Louis and Julia (nee Horvath) Solomon. He received his education at Crewkerne School. At the age of 14 ½ years Alex left school and worked on the family farm as well as for other farmers in the area. Alex enlisted into the Canadian Army on July 13, 1941 and served in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He received medal decorations which included the Canadian Volunteer Medal & Clasp, Defence Medal 1939 - 1945 Star and the France & Germany Star. He received his discharge from the Armed Forces on November 30, 1945. On November 3, 1946 Alex was united in marriage to Adele Popowich. Together they farmed for the next six years in the Parkerview district. He then commenced work for P.F.R.A. Community Pastures as a pasture manager of the Beaver Hills Community Pasture and onto the Garry Community Pasture for 33 ½ years. Alex and Adele retired and moved to Yorkton in 1987. Throughout the years of his retirement Alex enjoyed the company of family and friends, fishing, bowling, gardening and being a master at fixing small motors and just being Mr. Fix It. Alex loved his baseball, especially the Toronto Blue Jays. Alex leaves to cherish his memory his two children, daughter Marjorie of Calgary and son Bob of Yorkton (friend Clara); sisters-in-law Kay Solomon of Melville and Katie Solomon of Parkerview; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many special friends. Alex was predeceased by his wife Adele in 1991; his parents; brothers, Frank, Louis and Joe; sisters Helen Szabo, Irene Nagy, Margaret Horgus, Rose Bowes and six children in infancy. Prayer Vigil Service was held on Wednesday, May 7th and the Funeral Mass on Thursday, May 8th at St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church, Yorkton with Rev. Father Basil Chomos as the Celebrant. St. Gerard's Parish Choir accompanied by organist, Pam Yaremko led in the responses and the singing of the hymns. The cross bearer was Roger Horgus. The Legion Burial Rite was conducted by General Alexander Ross Branch #77 with Sgt-At-Arms Peter Wyatt, colour party George Arnold, Bill Dicker, Russell Bischop & Bill McQuarrie; buglar John Miller and Act of Remembrance Joe Yurkoski participating. The interment followed in Yorkton City Cemetery with Ed Applin, Dennis Bratkoski, Walter Holowatuik, Mervin Krett , Dennis Kuschak and Matt Macuick serving as the casket bearers.
