Sophie was born to Annie (Kosar) and John Walchuk at their family home in Amsterdam, SK. She was the third child to join the family unit that would eventually blossom to nine, (six girls and three boys). She received her education, grade one to eight at Crooked Hill Creek School in Amsterdam, SK.
She married Ed Kozuska from Sturgis, SK. in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Canora, SK.
A mixed farm by Sturgis, SK. became their home where they raised their daughters, Christine and Cindy. Ed and Sophie farmed till 2009 and even after Ed’s passing in 2011, Sophie continued to reside on their family farm.
Sophie wore a lot of different hats over the years and was amazing at juggling them. Her career was being joint partner with her husband, first in mixed farming and later in strictly grain farming. They were definitely equal partners, planning and encouraging each other in the next step of growing the farming operation.
Sophie had a tremendous love for God and her family. She was a member of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada since 1958. She belonged to Sturgis Holy Trinity Church for most of her life and the Women’s Auxiliary, serving as Vice President for a time.
Sophie loved almost every sport especially curling, football, basketball and baseball. She was even able to attend a Blue Jays game a few years ago. She enjoyed bowling in Sturgis for many years with the league there, many new friends were made and trophies won.
Ed & Sophie managed to do a bit of travelling to Disney, B.C., Mexico etc. as well as many trips to Hawaii and the surrounding islands. She enjoyed all that nature had to offer by gardening and creating the many gorgeous flower beds and pots that she did. She also enjoyed berry & mushroom picking, storm and cloud watching, cuddling and naming the new born kittens every year.
Sophie (Baba) finally got her special angel on earth when her granddaughter Kendra was born. She had enjoyed watching her grow up and seeing all her accomplishments.
Sophie is predeceased by her parents John and Annie, her brothers; Metro, Mike and Steve, her sisters; Violet Zawislak, Olga (Ollie) O’Connell and Mary Kurkowsky. Sophie leaves to cherish her memory two daughters; Christine (Randy) McCumsey of Fort St. John, B.C. and Cindy (Nestor) Dutchak of Yorkton, SK., her granddaughter Kendra Dutchak (fiancé Trevor De Cook) of Vancouver, B.C., sisters, Eileen Gryba and Iris (Gene) Heshka, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Sturgis with Rev. Father Petro Tsenov officiating. The cantor, Zenovia Duch led in the singing of the responses. The cross bearer was Kendra Dutchak. Words of tribute and remembrance were conveyed by daughter, Cindy Dutchak. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Luke at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Trevor De Cook, Michael Meroniuk, Chester Dutchak, Darcy Dutchak, Lisa O’Connell and Dan O’Connell serving as the casket bearers.
