Obituary of Joe Michalishen

MICHALISHEN - Mr. Joe Michalishen of Yorkton, formerly of the Willowbrook district, beloved husband of Kay passed away on October 23rd following a brief illness. He was 85 years of age. Joseph (Joe) Michalishen was born on April 15, 1923 on the family homestead in the Willowbrook district to Mike and Pauline (nee Fulawka) Michalishen. As a young man Joe worked at several different jobs which included bartending, cutting ice for coolers in Flin Flon and working in a lumber camp in Birtwell until farming with his dad on the family farm. Joe was united in marriage to Maria Anaka in June, 1952. This marriage was blessed with four sons, Meryl born in 1955, Morris - 1957, Glenn - 1963 and Grant - 1964. The couple farmed 4 quarters of land that consisted of a mixed farming operation in the Willowbrook area. In 1967 Joe began employment with the Livestock Pool, working the evening shift loading out cattle. To his dying days when he spoke of his job with the Pool there was always youth in his voice & a twinkle in his eye. He was proud of the job he had with the organization that spanned in excess of 20 years. In November of 1979 his first wife of 27 years, Maria passed away. In June of 1990 Joe remarried Kay Wsiaki. Joe and Kay moved off the farm in 1998, purchasing a house in Yorkton. On September 12, 2008 Joe was hospitalized up until his death. He leaves to cherish his memory his second wife, Kay; sons: Meryl (partner Linda) - children: Leticia, Claire, & Gillian; Morris (Nancy) - children: Hailey & Cole, Riannon & Devin; Glenn (Doria) - children: Logan, Parker & Aidan and Grant (Sharon) - children: Sarah & Regan. His siblings, Kay Popowich, Nellie Rohatinsky, Walter (Olga) McLashen, Ed (Helen) McLashen, Olga Duff and Stan (Kay) Mickalishen. He was predeceased by father, Mike in 1975, mother, Pauline in 1979, first wife, Maria in 1979; brothers-in- law, Steve Popowich, Julius Rohatinsky, Charlie Duff. Prayers were held on Sunday, October 26th, at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Raymond Lukie, C.Ss.R. officiating. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Monday, October 27th, at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church with Very Rev. Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita & parish choir members. Assisting as altar servers were Logan and Parker Michalishen. The crossbearer was Claire Michalishen and the epistle reader was Sarah Michalishen. The interment followed in Yorkton City Cemetery with Meryl Michalishen, Morris Michalishen, Glenn Michalishen and Grant Michalishen serving as the casket bearers. Reflections of his father's life were shared by son Glenn. Vichnaya Pamyat! Eternal memory! Funeral arrangements were in care of Bailey's Funeral Home.
