Obituary of Fred Pawliw
PAWLIW - Mr. Fred Pawliw, beloved husband of Sonja Pawliw of Yorkton entered eternal rest on March 2, 2009 at his home. He was 84 years of age. Fred was born on January 9, 1925 to William and Pauline (Derow) Pawliw. He grew up on the farm north of Springside and attended Sandy River School. They moved to a farm nearer to Springside where Fred farmed with his father. On October 13, 1947 Fred was united in marriage to Sonja Byblow at St. Mary's Church in Yorkton, while continuing to be parishioners at Whitesand. While his family moved again, Fred and Sonja remained on the farm and began raising their family. Later they lived in Springside while still farming. For health reasons Fred left the farm and worked at various places. These included: operating a grocery store and gas pumps at Oakshella and selling Fuller Brush products at Broadview. Four years later in 1960 a move to Orcadia brought him back to farming (his soul-food) with supplemental income at White Spruce Radar Base. Fred became an active and devoted member of St. Mary's Church; a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #5182. In 1977, he moved with his family to Yorkton where he continued his faithful participation in parish life. He enjoyed spending time visiting and sitting with friends and parishioners in the hospital and nursing home in Yorkton, even when he also was not well. A quiet but constant devotion to his faith infused every day. Aside from farming, Fred's other loves were carpentry, photography and old time music. His love of playing the violin began in his youth when he and friends played for dances and weddings. He has continued to play and passed on the joy of violin and music to his children and grandchildren. Privately he wrote short poems and kept meticulous notes on the weather. He also spent many quiet hours building miniature-to-scale replicas of buildings from the past. He also loved taking pictures of nature's wonders, home and family and of his beloved little farm haven, where he spent many contented hours. There he puttered, planted, built, painted, watched the clouds, wildlife, and fields from seeding, growth and harvest. His grandchildren spent many happy times at their special place with their grandpa. Now we have many photo albums to remind us of his many loves and the great joy he experienced with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Our beloved father, grandpa, gido, husband was predeceased by three infant siblings, his parents, elder brother Mike (Dora) and a grandson Seumas McNally.
