Obituary of Alice Park

PARK - Alice Lorraine Park of Abbotsford, BC and formerly of Yorkton; beloved wife of the late Jack Park passed away on October 13, 2009 at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre in Abbotsford, British Columbia. She was ninety years of age. Alice was born on April 18, 1919 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan where she attended Simpson School and YCI. In 1937 the Aveling family moved to Burnaby, B.C. where she was employed until her marriage to Jack on April 24, 1943. They moved to Calgary where Jack was stationed in the R.C.A.F. In 1945 they moved to Yorkton. Alice was a member of the Pythian Sisters for over 50 years and Beta Sigma Phi. She loved sport, especially golf and curling. Alice also had a love for band music; she enjoyed dancing and would be the first to put on a party for her friends. She was a member of the Donna Matthews curling team who, along with Ella Baker and Rita Davidson, won the Saskatchewan Ladies Provincial Championship in 1958 and went on to represent Saskatchewan in the Western Canadian Championship that same year. In 1995 the team was inducted into the Yorkton Sports Hall of Fame. Alice was active in curling for more than 30 years and became a life member of the Yorkton Curling Club. Alice was also a Y.C.I. speed skater, played ice hockey and enjoyed golf at the recreational and organizational level. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed her knitting, tending her garden but was best know for her roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and especially her apple pies. The Wednesday Gang "get togethers" were a regular part of Jack and Alice's life. Alice will always be remembered as a generous woman, although, she spoke her mind, she had a heart of gold. Predeceased by her: husband - Jack Norman Park, December 5, 1995; parents - Madge Kershaw Aveling (nee Jackson) (1959); Edgar Leslie Aveling (1959); her brothers - William Haig Aveling (1997); Herbert Edgar Jackson Aveling (2003); her sister - Madeline (Peggy) Moum (2009); sisters-in-law - Norah Aveling, Jean Park; brothers-in-law - Neil (Kelly) Park, Earle Park; niece - Oralee Jupp; nephews - Brian Aveling and Bill Aveling. She leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters: Lorraine (Fred) Hansen, Mavis MacDonald; four Grandchildren and five Great Grandchildren: Todd (Lorraine) Hansen and Natalie of Abbotsford, B.C.; Brett (Shakira) Hansen and Jack Derek of Abbotsford, B.C.; Jodi (Chris Cyca) MacDonald of Kelowna B.C.; Krista Waddell, Marissa, Makenna and Miranda of Abbotsford, B.C.; her sisters-in-law - Bev Aveling and Idella Park, as well as, her nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. The Funeral service was held on Monday morning, October 26, 2009 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with With Faye Greer of Westview United Church Officiating. Amanda Buhler was the organist. Musical prelude was "Whispering Hope" and "Morning Has Broken". Soloist, Debbie Onslow - Kitzan sang the hymn "In the Garden". The Congregational Hymn was "Just A Closer Walk With Thee". During the service tributes and words of remembrance of Alice's life were given by her daughter, Lorraine Hansen and grandchild, Jodi MacDonald. The recessional Solo ( Debbie Onslow - Kitzan ) was "Precious Lord, Take My Hand". The Honourary Bearers were: Dawna Lee Park, Jack Park, Norman Park, Mona Dixon, Betty Hrycyk, Rosie Gibney, Corinne Junek, Allan Bailey, Amy Windt, Pearl and Norm McKeeman, Dorothy Fehrenbach, Irma Esopenko, Sandy Hughes, Doreen Hancock, Mavis and Paul Prokopiuk and Karen Brice. The interment followed in the family plot in the Garden of Memories, Yorkton Memorial Gardens with granddaughters: Jodi MacDonald, Krista Waddell and grandsons: Todd and Brett Hansen serving as urnbearers. During the memorial Luncheon many memories of Alice and Jack were conveyed by family and friends. In memory of Alice memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Parkinson's Foundation as gifts of remembrance.
