Obituary of Mary Haig

HAIG - Mary was born on September 2, 1917 at Morsil, Jumpland, Sweden; a daughter of Karl and Karloline (nee Haugen) Swenson. In 1925 she emigrated to Canada with her parents. She was raised in the Kelliher district. On June 30, 1946 she was united in marriage to George Haig in Regina. The couple farmed in the Leross district until retiring to the Sunset Estates, just east of Saskatoon, in 2004. They enjoyed returning to the farm in the summers as long as they could. Mary participated in all aspects of the farm as well as being a meticulous housekeeper, cook, baker, seamstress, knitter, crotchetier, ceramic maker and gardener. But her favourite role was that of grand-parent to her 7 grandchildren. Those "kids" sure knew that when Nana came there would be Swedish thinbread and gingersnaps for sure! We will miss her dearly. Mary had suffered many mini-strokes over the last few years and succumbed following a major stroke on Sunday, October 25th. She passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2009 at the Saskatoon City Hospital. She was 92 years of age. Mary was predeceased by her parents Karl and Karoline Swenson; her daughter Elaine Farkas; a son Raymond in infancy; her bothers: Oscar (Emily), Bernard and John (Doris), her sisters: Sophia (Alex Petersen), Karen (Peter Pearson) and Engla (Bror Samualson/William Groome), and a number of nieces and nephews including Ivan, Dagney and Sylvia with whom she was very close. Mary is survived by her loving husband, of 63 years, George; her daughter Lynnette (Vern ) Seversen of Pelly, Sask and their two sons; Todd ( Sarah) and Avery of Canora, Sask, and Andrew of Pelly, Sask, her son Robert (Cyndi) of White City, Sask. and their 3 daughters Deanna and daughter Haylie of Copper Sands, Bobbi (Todd) Schutz and their children: Sarah , Karden, and Saydie Ann of White City, and Lacee (Kris) Heller and their children Hannah, Avery, and Madyson of Balgonie, Sask; her son-in-law Sid Farkas and his children Tiffiny (Monte) and Erica Morrison and Robert (Ashlea) and Taylor and Tyson all of Saskatoon. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 from St. Vladimir's Church in Kelliher with Rev. Brian Mee of the United Church of Canada officiating. Son-in-law, Vern Seversen gave a tribute to Mary. The organist, Esta Sweatman led the congregation in the singing of the hymns 'How Great Thou Art', 'Abide With Me', and 'Church in the Wildwood'. The recessional song was a CD of Alan Jackson 'Sissy-s Song'. The interment took place in the Kelliher Lutheran Cemetery with Todd and Andrew Seversen, Robert Farkas, Todd Schutz, Chris Heller and Monte Morrison serving as the casketbearers.
