Mildred Doris Petersen was born on August 26, 1931 at Wadena, Saskatchewan; the fourth of seven children born to Ed and Pearl (nee Elliott) Ottmann. Milly was raised on the farm in the Kuroki/Kylemore district and received her education at the Bear Lake School. As a young woman, she was employed at the Hardware Store in Wadena, then at Tabashnik's Dress Shop. In 1951 Milly met Pete Petersen, and the couple were married on July 23, 1952 at Wadena. Their first son, Darryl was born in 1954. In June of 1956 the family moved to Hudson Bay. The family resided in Hudson Bay for 6 1/2 years and while there a second son Dean was born in 1957, and a third son, Derek in 1961. While in Hudson Bay, the family made many new friends and Pete and Milly were instrumental in establishing a square dance club that quickly grew to over 100 members. In 1962 the family transferred to Yorkton, where they have since resided. Milly was a devoted homemaker during this time, tending to the needs of her boys and during these years she also took in several boarders. In 1971 Milly began employment with the Yorkton School Board in a program being implemented for physically and mentally challenged children called the Yorkton Developmental Centre. For a number of years she worked at St. Mary's School before the program was transferred to the Lion's School. She retired in 1988. Milly loved her summers at the cabin at Madge Lake, and she and Peter were fortunate to spend 12 winters in Mesa, Arizona, where many new Canadian and American friends were made. Milly battled lung disease for a number of years. She passed away at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on Thursday, December 17, 2009. She was 78 years of age. Predeceased by her parents, brothers Garnet (Phyllis) & Clayton; nephews Sidney, Garry & Kenneth, a niece Grace, and a great nephew, Mark. Milly leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish her memory, her beloved husband Pete; sons: Darryl (Lola) of Saskatoon; Dean (Gayla) of Yorkton; and Derek (Linda) of Invermere, BC; grandchildren: Janna (Lee), Kelsey, Elyse, and Dane. Her brothers: Victor (Jean) Ottmann of Wadena, Lloyd (Helen) Ottmann of Wadena; and Don (Margaret) Ottmann of Fishing Lake; a sister, Paulette Althouse of Wadena; numerous nieces, nephews, and her many other relatives and friends.
