Obituary of Mary Tkachuk
TKACHUK - Mrs. Mary E. Tkachuk of Extendicare Nursing Home, Moose Jaw and formerly of Yorkton and Calder passed away peacefully Friday, January 1, 2010 with family by her side at the age of 95 years. Mary Tkachuk was born May 12, 1914 in the Merridale district, Roblin, Manitoba to Michael and Sophie Finkaryk and was educated at the Postup school. Mary was first married to William Kulyk who passed away in 1943, leaving her two young daughters, Sophie and Vicki, where they farmed in the Merridale district. She kept farming until she met Ely Roy Tkachuk from Calder. They married at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Winnipeg, Manitoba in October 1946. She moved to Calder where Ely and Mary operated Tkachuk's hardware until 1985 when they retired but continued to reside in Calder. Due to Ely's poor health, they sold everything in Calder and moved to Yorkton in 1990 to make their new home. During her life, Mary was a member of St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Calder and Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Yorkton. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Churches and loved singing in the choir for as long as she could attend. She was a very active member of her community where she helped out with whatever had to be done. She enjoyed her curling, bingo and being in company with her friends and whenever someone came, no one left without having a coffee and dainties. Mary loved doing all crafts from knitting, crocheting, quilting, to making wedding and anniversary cakes and flowers. She loved her garden and flowers and enjoyed painting homes, which she did for many people. She spent many hours helping with crafts at Anderson Lodge and helping out at the church in Yorkton. She was very fond of her family. Mary Tkachuk leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish her memory two daughters: Sophie Olexy of St. Catharines, ON and grandchildren Daryl (Dee) Olexy, Darlene McLaughlin; Vicki (Brian) Gowan of Lindsay, ON, grandchildren Lynn (Pat) Taylor Walton, Miles Gowan, Sherman (Lisa) Gowan; one son Roy (Corrine) Tkachuk of Moose Jaw, SK and grandchildren Jason (Sadye) Tkachuk and Carla Tkachuk. She is lovingly remembered by her great grand children Tyler and Cody McLaughlin; Felicia (Ian) Taylor Robinson, Lena and Dylan Gowan: Hanna Jo and Lillas Gowan; Bohdan and Porter Tkachuk. She also has two great great grandchildren, Cameron and Karelee Robinson. Mary Tkachuk, being the last sibling, was predeceased by her husband Ely on October 16, 1991; her parents Michael and Sophie; brothers and sisters, Bill, Nick twins Katie and Nick, Annie, Pearl and Mary's twin sister Nellie, as well as by one son-in-law, Victor Olexy. th Prayers were held on Friday, January 8th and the funeral service on Saturday, January 9 , at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church Yorkton, Saskatchewan with Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky officiating. The responses were led by Gerald Yaholnitsky & parish choir members. The crossbearer was Walter Shymko. The interment followed in the Garden of Gethsemane at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Jason Tkachuk, Brian Gowan, Rudolph Klemetski, Leonard Gluska, Tony Calanchie and Jack Popoff serving as the casket bearers.
