Obituary of Nick Spelchen
SPELCHEN - Mr. Nick Spelchen, formerly of the Springside / Whitesand area entered eternal rest on February 24, 2010 at Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 83 years of age. Nick was born on December 1, 1926 in the Whitesand district, son of Fred and Magdalene (nee Diakow) Spelchen. He was raised on the family farm and attended Homestead School. He left school at an early age and spent his younger years working in mines and bush camps in Ontario and Alberta. He farmed for a time in the Parkerview district and then moved to the family farm at Springside where he resided. Due to poor health, Nick became a resident of a private care facility and then to the north wing of Yorkton District Nursing Home. He enjoyed watching sports, especially hockey & ball and spent a lot of time during the summer at Good Spirit Lake. Nick was predeceased by his parents; brothers Johnny, Mike and Bill; sister 's Anne Byblow and Pauline Holodiuk; brothers-in-law Steve Bodnar, Steve Byblow, Nick Biblow, Walter Holodiuk and Peter Verheyde; niece Kristi Spelchen and nephew Bill Tzupa. He is survived by his sisters Dorothy Biblow and Mary Bodnar of Yorkton, Olga Verheyde of Vancouver and Roselynn (Emil) Arabsky of Grand Prairie, AB; his brother Peter (Donna) Spelchen of Canora; sister-in-law Anne Spelchen of Springside; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Prayers were held on Sunday, February 28th at Chapel of Bailey's Funeral Home, Yorkton with Rev. Father Ray Lukie, C.Ss.R. Requiem Divine Liturgy was held on Monday, March 1st at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Yorkton with Very Rev. Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant.The responses were led by Ed Pindus & Parish Choir Members. The cross bearer was Melissa Spelchen and the epistle reader was Donna Spelchen. The interment followed at St. Mary's Parish Cemetery, Whitesand District with Dean Spelchen, Dale Spelchen, Bernie Slogotski, Don Danyluk, Tom Byblow and Jason Baptist serving as the casket bearers. Following the reception, nephew & niece Dean & Melissa Spelchen shared reflections of their uncle's life. Vichnaya Pamyat! Eternal memory!
