Obituary of Irene Purves
PURVES - Irene Eva Lena (Kretlow) Purves of Kelowna, BC. passed away at the Kelowna General Hospital, March 15, 2010. Irene was born April 10, 1922 at Kincaid, Saskatchewan to Hazel (Hefner) and Charles Kretlow. She attended Wideview School at Mankota until age 12. In 1934 the family relocated to Wadena, Saskatchewan. Here she attended a country school until she was needed to help at home and on the farm. She married James Purves on November 28, 1946 at Wadena. They lived at Oak River, Manitoba, until 1950 during which time their son James (Jim) and daughter Gloria were born. In 1950 they moved to the Glyndwr School district at Bredenbury, Saskatchewan. In 1954 they moved 6 miles north to the Cut Arm School district where they farmed. In 1956 Irene moved away living in various places in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta until finally settling in Kelowna, BC. in the 1960's. Here she lived until her death. Irene was an avid gardener, an excellent horse woman in her younger years and took good care of her home. For many years she enjoyed a pet dog. She loved company and made several trips back and forth to Saskatchewan and Manitoba to visit family. Irene spent the last 2½ years of her life at Lake Country Lodge. She was predeceased by her parents, Hazel (Hefner) and Charles Kretlow, her husband James Purves, two sisters Delta and Gladys, two brothers Roy and Albert. Her brother Ken passed away in July, 2010. She is survived by her son, James (Jim) Purves and wife Ann of Bredenbury, SK; her daughter, Gloria and Bert of Dauphin, MB; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one brother Paul (Grace) of Creston, BC.; 3 sisters-in- law, Janet Kretlow of Genelle, BC., Sonia Purves of Yorkton, SK and Corrine Purves of Yorkton, SK; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
