Obituary of Richard Webster

Our deep sense of loss and sorrow is tempered with joy in the memory of a life well lived. Richard (Dick) beloved husband of Louise, passed away at Yorkton Regional Hospital on Saturday, April 24, 2010 after a lengthy illness. Dick was born April 20th, 1922, on the Webster Homestead, in the Clumber District. He was the oldest son of Colin and Constance Webster and was raised along with his two bothers and one sister on the family farm south of Bredenbury, Saskatchewan. Dick attended Clumber School and farmed with his Dad until he enlisted in the RCAF, training as an air force mechanic. Upon returning to Saskatchewan after the war he worked in road construction and eventually took up farming until he retired in 1980.Dick loved the land and had a deep appreciation of family and history. He enjoyed reading, playing cards, visiting family and friends and traveling to far away places. He was an avid curler and fan, after retiring to Bredenbury he helped look after the golf course and spent many hours refining his golf game. He was a mechanic and woodworker always ready to lend a helping hand whenever or wherever a job needed to be done- at the Busy Bees, with the Christmas Light Committee or at the Curling Rink. He was secretary-treasurer of Bredenbury Legion for many years. The Royal Canadian Legion was important to him and he was very involved both locally and provincially, receiving a sixty year pin as a life long member. He was a Councilor for the R.M of Saltcoats as well as the Mayor of Bredenbury for a term. He also served on the Board of Lakeside Manor Care Home in Saltcoats during the construction and start-up phase as well as a Director of Sunnyside Cemetery - volunteering and community service was essential to Dick. He cherished and remembered his many good times with family and friends. Predeceased by his parents, Colin and Constance Webster, his brother JohnWebster and his wife Jean, his friend and brother-in-law Cyril Felgate, nephew Scott David Felgate; his very special aunt Kathleen Harrison and his step son-in-law Myron Gabert. Dick leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory, his loving wife Louise of 44 years; daughter Lorna Ann Marie; sister Marjorie Felgate; brother Allan (Leni) Webster; step-children, Jean Gabert; Joyce (Robert) Morgan; Linda (Joe) Nagy; Dennis (Sherry) Cooper; Debra (Peter) Welechenko; grandchildren, nieces and nephews as well as numerous extended relatives and friends. The Funeral Service was held on Friday April 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. from the Knox United Church, Bredenbury, Saskatchewan with Thom Carnahan presiding. The organist, Mr. Lorne Neal and the Bredenbury United Church Choir led the congregation in the singing of the hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art". The Choir also sang the Anthem "In the Garden" and soloist Sherry Cooper, accompanying herself on guitar, sang "Amazing Grace". Dick's sister, Marjorie Felgate, remembered him in eulogy. The Legion Burial Rite was conducted by members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Yorkton and Bredenbury Branches. Peter Wyatt was the Sergeant at Arms. The Colour Party were members: Wilf Thorsness, Bill Dicker, George Arnold and Andy Juba with Thom Carnahan as Padre' and John Miller as Bugler. Dennis and Chris Cooper served as Urn Bearers. The interment followed in the Bredenbury Town Cemetery. Lunch was served by the Bredenbury United Church Women in Bredenbury Hall. Gifts of remembrance may be made to Knox United Church, Bredenbury, Saskatchewan or a charity of your choice.
