Obituary of Melfort Shlachetka
SHALCHETKA - Mr. Melfort Shlachetka of Yorkton, formerly of Springside, beloved husband of Annie Shlachetka died suddenly on June 21, 2010. He was 83 years of age. Melfort (Mel) Shlachetka was born on December 18, 1926 in the Springside district, the youngest child of Metro and Annie Shlachetka. He was raised on the family farm and attended the Homestead school. Eventually Mel took over the family farm and continued to farm until his retirement in 1998. Melfort married Annie Stelmacowich (Greschuk) on July 14, 1973. Melfort and Annie resided on the family farm until 1998 when they moved to Yorkton - spending the winter months in Yorkton and summer months on the family farm. In addition to his farming duties, Melfort served as a councilman for the RM of Good Lake #274 as well as worked as an adjustor for the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance for many years. He was a member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Whitesand. Melfort's passion and love of farming and gardening was evident throughout his life. He was especially proud to have received the "Century Family Farm Award" in 200 . Melfort was predeceased by his parents Metro and Annie, sisters Pauline Paulo and Margaret Yuzek. He leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his life, his wife Annie of 37 years; sisters Polly Mintenko and Marie Lischynski; step children Kathleen (John) Stolar, Patrick (Darlene) Stelmacowich, Patricia (Gary) Greenman, Elaine (Howard) Schweitzer, Lynn (Richard) Weger; nephews Marshall (Rita) Paulo, Ted (Sylvia) Yuzek, Daniel (Gloria) Lischynski, Frank (Rose) Mintenko, Danny (Corrinne) Yuzek, niece Adeline (William) Lazaroff; brothers-in- law Nick (Martha), William (Maryann) and Alexander (Diane) Greschuk; step grandchildren (12) & step great grandchildren (10); as well as many other family and friends. HE WILL REMAIN WITH US IN SPIRIT! Prayers were held on Sunday, June 27th and the Requiem Divine Liturgy on Monday, June 28th, both from St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Yorkton with Rev. Father Vladimir Kolpakov, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita & parish choir members. The crossbearer was Danny Yuzek and the epistle reader was Gloria Lischynski. "All members of the Congregation" were considered honourary bearers. The interment took place at Yorkton City Cemetery with Marshall Paulo, Frank Mintenko, Ted Yuzek, Cleo Loster, Daniel Lischynski and Emil Byblow serving as the casket bearers.
