Obituary of Irene Fowlie

FOWLIE - Irene Fowlie, resident of the Canora Gateway Lodge, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 9, 2010. She was 91 years of age. Lucie Irene Fowlie was born on March 18, 1919 in the Heward district of Saskatchewan; a daughter of John Frederick and Grace (nee Tofts) Harvie. She was raised in the Heward district and received her education there. Irene attended Normal School in Regina, where she received her Teaching Certificate. She taught school at Sequin and Griffin before she married William (Bill) Fowlie on July 5, 1939 at Weyburn. In the late 1960's Irene taught at Creelman for a time. The couple farmed in the Heward district until 1977, when they moved to Canora to farm with their son, Vernon. Irene had a great quest for learning, and she followed that quest after her children completed High School by taking classes at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Calgary, where she successfully completed her Bachelor of Education, Master of Education and Master of Arts and Science in English. In later years she volunteered with the Parkland Community College as an English tutor. Irene lived on the farm until the fall of 2008. She had a great love for life and took loving interest in her children, grandchildren and later great grandchildren, supporting them in all their endeavours. In younger years, she was very involved in her community. She was a 4-H leader, Sunday school teacher, church organist as well as serving on the School Board for several years. She was an avid curler, skilled seamstress, and kept up with all current affairs. She pursued her many hobbies with a passion and took great pride in her yard and garden. Irene and Bill were fortunate enough to enjoy a number of winters in Weslaco, Texas, where visiting with new friends and playing shuffleboard were favorite pastimes. Irene was predeceased by Bill in February of 1995; their son Roderick Howard in 1943; a brother, John Harvie; and by a sister, Elinore Tanner. She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Gloria (Larry) Thring of Rocky Mountain House, AB; son Vernon (Marilyn) Fowlie of Rhein, SK; four grandchildren: Christopher (Brandi) Thring of Castlegar BC and children Gabriel, Indie & Willow; Brent Thring of Rocky Mountain House, AB; Teri Lynn (Sheldon) Van Parys of Rhein and children Caitlyn & Danielle; Travis (Trina) Fowlie of Canora and children Shane, Payton & Raegen; numerous nieces, nephews, and her many other relatives and friends. The interment will take place in the family plot in the Heward Cemetery in 2011. In memory of Irene memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society. Arrangements are in care of Bailey's Funeral Home, Yorkton. Interment Details
