Obituary of Mike Kowalyshen

KOWALYSHEN - Mr. Mike Kowalyshen of Yorkton, formerly of the Rhein district died on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 87 years of age. Mike was born April 7, 1923 in the Rhein district, a son of Adam and Eudokia (nee Gulak) Kowalyshen. He received his education at Rhein. After completing Grade VIII Mike helped his father with farming. This was the period where farming was changing from horses to tractor. In 1937 the family purchased their tractor and plow. In 1940 Mike was united in marriage to Sophie Ninowsky of Calder. The couple moved to Mike's father's homestead and continued to help with farming. As time progressed so did their farming operation. In 1981 Mike and Sophie moved to Yorkton to spend the winter months. They also spent three winters in Canora. Mike retired from farming in 1994 but continued to maintain the farm yard and buildings. In 1987 Mike's beloved Sophie became ill and died. Her service was held on December 24, 1987. Mike continued to reside in Yorkton and recently became a resident of the Gladstone Senior's Assisted Living Complex. Mike is survived by two sons, Harvey (Margaret) of Regina and Leo of Yorkton; two granddaughters Leane (Charlie) Johnston and Wendy Marshall of Regina and a sister-in-law Mary Kowalyshen and brother-in-law George Paradis. Besides his parents and wife Sophie, Mike was predeceased by his sister Vicky Paradis and brother Metro Kowalyshen. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, November 15th at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Mr. Mervin Dubnyk of the Yorkton Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses officiating. The interment followed in the Garden of Devotion at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Lorne Klimchuk, Robert Purich, Charlie Johnston, Gordon Halek, Glen Brown and Mike Shore serving as the casket bearers.
