Obituary of Ted Taras Tarnowetski

TARNOWETSKI- Ted Tarnowetski beloved husband of Helen Tarnowetski of Yorkton, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at the Regina General Hospital. He was eighty three years of age. Ted Taras Tarnowetski was born at the family homestead, south of Tuffnell, Saskatchewan on October 23rd 1928 and was the second youngest of the ten children. He attended both Fountain and Tuffnell schools, and then his secondary education in Edmonton. He was united in marriage to Helen Magera on August 12th 1949 at the Sheho Ukrainian Orthodox Church and would have celebrated 63 years of marriage this year. They enjoyed social events and curling. Ted and Helen had one daughter, RoseAnn, born in Foam Lake. With his love of the land, they continued to farm until 1960 when he accepted a position with the Sask Wheat Pool in Tonkin and later (1980) was transferred to manage the Yorkton Branches. In 1986, he retired in Yorkton from the Wheat Pool. Ted had three grandchildren, Amanda (January 1982), Kristopher (January 1984) and Kaley (September 1987). Grandpa was always just a phone call away from his grandchildren and it was not uncommon for him to have at least one grandchild bouncing in the backseat of his car. His grandchildren were the sparkle in his eye and the beneficiaries of his early retirement. He loved adventure and travelled throughout Canada and the United States including Hawaii and Alaska and then in 2007, he visited China with his daughter. Ted always loved to be in contact with people and enjoyed spending time working bingos and banquets at the Ukrainian Orthodox Auditorium. He became involved with the MS Society and volunteered his time for nine walks in Yorkton. Thursday morning coffee breaks at the mall were a routine for Ted where he enjoyed the companionship of many friends. He loved fishing, gardening and baking. Ted enjoyed spending time at the lake, fishing or just helping out with anything he could. He was known to have a garden at least three times what was necessary, and more potatoes than could be reasonably eaten or given away in one year. Garlic was also a staple in Ted's garden. His sugar cookies were among some of the best. Ted was a true animal lover and had a variety of treats in his cupboards for his canine family. He was known to share his supper with all the dogs at the table while his family pretended they did not see the free handouts. Ted's favourite pastime was definitely spending time with grandchildren, family and friends. He always made time for a cup of tea and a visit. He had a kind soul, loving heart and will always be remembered for the sparkle in his eyes, his huge smile and his joking remarks. He truly lived life to his fullest, doing the things he loved. Ted passed peacefully with his family by his side on January 29th, 2012 at the Regina General Hospital. He was 83 years of age. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Anne, his brothers, John, Bill, Matt and Fred, and his sisters, Victoria, Nell and Mary. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen, daughter RoseAnn (Brian), three grandchildren, Amanda (husband Philip), Kristopher (fiancée Melanie) and Kaley, his sister Sylvia Anklewich and brother Walter and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, and many, many dear friends. Prayer Services were held on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. from Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton. Funeral Services were held on Thursday, February 2, 2012 from Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church with Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky officiating. Responses were led by William Kozey assisted by members of the Parish Choir. Dan Filipchuk served as crossbearer. Carl Slegal and Geri Arvay served as bannerbearers. Honourary Bearers were close friends, Anne Zaharia, the Late Steve Zaharia and the Late Gloria Filipchuk, brothers in law, the Late Leo Anklewich and the Late Bill Magera and each and every one of his friends & family. Interment followed in the Garden of Gethsemane at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Phil Matechuk, Ivan Magera, Russell Weirner, Bob Kuzyk, Wayne Arvay and Al Arvay serving as the casket bearers.
