Obituary of Edward Shewchuk

Mr. Edward Shewchuk of ST. Paul Lutheran Home Melville and formerly of Springside and Jedburgh passed away at his residence on February 13, 2012. He was 78 years of age. Edward was born February 2, 1934 in Beckenham Saskatchewan. He is the fifth of thirteen children. His family moved to the Parkerview area in 1940 where he started school at Chiselhurst. The family moved to the Jedburgh area in 1944 when Ed was ten years old and there he attended Forest Nook, a one room country school. The farm was located six miles southwest of Jedburgh. Being the oldest son he had to assume farm responsibilities at an early age. In the summer of 1956, Ed went to work in Brantford, Ontario. He was employed with the Natural Gas Company. In early 1957 Ed moved to Montreal to work as a shipper for a wholesaler. In the late fall of 1957 Ed decided to come home and resume farming. In the early 60's Ed decided to try his hand at trucking. He purchased a trucking franchise from John Kentz to haul local cream, eggs and cattle to the Yorkton market. After two years Ed realized there was no future in the local trucking business so he resumed farming on a full time basis and bought another quarter of land. Ed's parents retired in December of 1970 and moved to Ituna. Ed took over the family farm and continued to farm for a number of years. In November 1993 Ed retired from the farm and moved to Springside where he bought a house. In his retirement he finally had time to do some things he enjoyed like fishing, curling and gardening. He loved watching curling, baseball and hockey on TV. He also loved to go to watch the Yorkton Terriers Junior Hockey team play. He enjoyed gardening and always grew a good crop of tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables. He bought a boat and spent a great deal of time fishing. When Edward moved to Springside he worked for some of the local farmers helping with seeding and harvest. He had a stroke on his 67th birthday, Feb 2, 2001. Because of his great determination he was able to live at home with the help of Homecare and wonderful neighbours. The people in Springside were very supportive and helpful during his time of need. As a family we are very thankful and appreciative of the support given to our brother. We are especially thankful to Irene Nehring and her family. On October 5, 2010 Edward had a fall that resulted in a major concussion. He was hospitalized, required surgery and was never able to return home. On January 28, 2011 he was transferred to St. Paul Lutheran Home in Melville. Despite the excellent care he received at the nursing home his health continued to fail and he passed away. He was predeceased by his parents Mike and Mary Shewchuk; his sister Sophia Harder; three infant siblings, Ann, Rose and Nick Shewchuk; nephews Jeffrey Shewchuk and David Smith; niece Sherry Shewchuk; brother-in-law Willie Charanduk. Edward is survived by his siblings; Kathryn (Stuart) Smith, Mary (Willie) Charanduk, Lornce Harder (Sophia), William (Stella) Shewchuk, Ernest (Leona) Shewchuk, Marlene (Dwight) Hitchcock, Michael (Sharon) Shewchuk, Elaine (Al) Johnson, Sylvia (Charles) Phelan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral service was held on Saturday afternoon, February 18, 2012 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Father Ray Lukie C.Ss.R. of ST. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church officiating. Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita and members of ST. Mary's Parish Choir sang the responses to the service. Two special song selections were played: "Amazing Grace" (Judy Collins) and "The Rose" (Bette Midler). The reflections and remembrances of Ed's life were given by his brother, Dr. Michael Shewchuk, his niece, Karen Burns and his brother - in - law Al Johnson. The interment followed the memorial luncheon at the Springside Town Cemetery with: William, Ernie, Michael Shewchuk, Charles Phelan, Al Johnson and Dwight Hitchcock serving as Casket Bearers with Leanne Shewchuk as Cross Bearer.
