Obituary of Dora Ruf

RUF - Dora Ruf, widow of the late Adam Ruf passed away at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 with her daughter Katherine and grandchildren Chloe, Courtney and their mother Debbie by her side. Dora was born on July 24, 1918 on the family farm east of Stornoway, Saskatchewan to Katherine (nee Liebrecht) and Henry Engel. She was baptized, confirmed and married at the Stornoway Trinity Lutheran Church. She received her education at the Stornoway School. She stayed on the family farm and helped out until October 29, 1939, when at the age of 21 she married the love of her life Adam. It was a special day for her as her sister Clara and Adam's cousin Dan Ruf were also married alongside of them. The marriage was blessed with two children, Wayne in 1954 and Katherine in 1958. Besides raising the children Dora was very involved in the family business of farming, keeping a big garden and keeping the yard neat and tidy and beautifying it with flowers and shrubs. In the 1970's she entered her yard in the Horticultural Show and won first prize for best farm yard. The only organization she was involved with was the LWML, which she was very proud of and would say "I was involved with it for over 40 years, both in Stornoway and Yorkton". On November 5, 1977 Dora and Adam semi-retired to Yorkton where she continued to make their yard beautiful with her flowers and shrubs. In 2002 they sold their home and moved into an apartment. After Adam passed away in 2006 she continued to live on her own in the apartment until she fell and broke her leg (tending her flower pots) in 2008. After this she moved in with her daughter's family for a number of months till she moved into the Yorkton and District Nursing Home in October of 2008. While in the home she made friends, one in particular, Diane Hilderman. The two of them would tend the flowers outside, and when finished, they would sit in the chairs enjoying the beauty of God's nature, both in the flowers and the birds. Her love for nature shone inside the home as well. The resident Budgie bird would always have fresh water and was covered up nicely at night and uncovered in the morning. She named the bird 'Little Birdie" which she would talk to. Two days before her death she asked "Who is looking after Little Birdie" . Predeceased by her son Wayne in 2003; husband Adam in 2006; parents; brothers John, Henry, Edwin & Alfred; and sisters Leah Ruf and Clara Ruf; brothers-in-law, Henry Ruf, Dan Ruf & Hank Elzer. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Katherine Scutchings and husband Richard; grandchildren: Jennifer, Luke, Chloe, Corey & Courtney; great granddaughter Nova; a sister, Rachel Elzer of Lumbey BC; God children: Eleanor Dickie, Robert Engel & Brenda Loeppky (Engel); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and her many other relatives and friends. The funeral service was held on Tuesday afternoon, February 21, 2012 from the Zion Lutheran Church in Yorkton with Rev. Daniel Moeller officiating. Organist, Verna Liebrecht led the congregation in the singing of the hymns "Let Us Ever Walk With Jesus', "Jesus, Lead Thou On", and "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus". The interment took place in the Garden of St. Matthew at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Richard and Luke Scutchings, Rob Engel, and Corey, Courtney & Chloe Propp serving as the casket bearers.
