Obituary of Lucy Kachur

KACHUR - Mrs. Lucy Kachur of Yorkton, formerly of Tadmore, beloved wife of Paul Kachur entered eternal rest on March 20, 2012 at the age of 81 years. Lucy was born on September 6, 1930 in the Tadmore District, Saskatchewan. She passed away late Tuesday evening, March 20, 2012 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre after a very brief stay. Lucy was the third of six children born to Michael and Nellie (nee Fulawka) Marcinko. She attended a rural school known as Forest Hill School and, along with her sister and brothers, assisted her parents on the family farm southwest of Tadmore. In 1946 the Marcinko family moved to another farm a few miles east of Tadmore, immediately south of Crystal Lake. For a few winters in the late 1940's Lucy joined her sister Helen in Winnipeg and the two farm girls from Tadmore worked in the big city at a ladies garment factory. On July 17, 1950 Lucy was united in marriage to Paul Kachur, a farm boy whose family lived across the road and they continued to farm in the Crystal Lake area. In December, 1953 Lucy and Paul moved in to their newly- built home on an acreage in Tadmore in time for the birth of their first child, Randy Paul. A second son, Donald Michael, was born in January, 1956. Lucy's farming career ended when Paul and Lucy moved to Tadmore and Randy was born. She turned her attention to being a homemaker and a mother and she did a great job with both. Lucy established a beautiful yard surrounding the house in Tadmore. Her flower garden was the envy of the community. In addition to gardening, Lucy enjoyed sewing, knitting and doing crochet work. Lucy was an active member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Tadmore and served on and directed various committees through the years. This was a church that both Lucy's parents and Paul's parents worked hard to establish and both Lucy and Paul did what they could to keep the parish vibrant as long as possible. After Paul down-sized his farming operation in around 1978, Lucy and Paul took the time to do other things. They travelled to many places in the USA, including Hawaii, and enjoyed spending the winter months in Las Vegas, San Diego and Yuma, for quite a few years. Paul loved to drive and Lucy must have been a good map reader because they would always arrive back home around Easter with stories to tell of what they had seen and who they had met. In November, 2000 Lucy and Paul moved from Tadmore to a home on Stewart Crescent in Yorkton. Lucy enjoyed the amenities that Yorkton offered and they no longer had to travel an hour to see their grandchildren once or twice a week. Lucy became a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada at St. Mary's Church and participated in their activities as long as her health allowed her to do so. Lucy's three grandchildren - Courtney, Liddy and Logan - were a very important part of her life. Their "Bobbi" was always available for them, whether to babysit, bake cookies, take them to Crystal Lake, attend music recitals, watch Logan play any game involving a puck or a ball (and he played them all), or just share stories and visit. Bobbi and Grandpa Paul spent a lot of quality time with their grandchildren and this continued until her passing. Lucy was predeceased by her parents, Michael (1959) and Nellie (1999), and her younger brother Larry (1996). She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Paul, her son, Randy Kachur (Cynthia) of Yorkton and their three children, Courtney Kachur (Steve Will) of Calgary, Liddy Hilderman (Craig) of Saskatoon and Logan Kachur of Saskatoon and her son, Donald Kachur (Corey) of San Diego. She is also survived by her siblings, Helen Olchowecki of Winnipeg, Stan Marchinko (Alice) of Saskatoon, Ed Marcinko (Barb Sloggett) of Winnipeg, Bernard Marcinko (Julie Ford) of Sydney, Australia and her sister-in-law, Shirley Marchinko of Winnipeg, and four nieces and nephews, Marnie Butt (Leonard) of Victoria, Ronald Olchowecki (Sharri Wolfson) of Winnipeg, Shelley Marchinko of Winnipeg, and Nancy Marchinko (Darren Anderson) of Calgary. A Prayer Service was held on Sunday, March 25th at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. A eulogy was given by Randy Kachur. The Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Monday, March 26th at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church with Very Rev. Fr. Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R. as Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita and parish choir members. Serving as cross bearer Logan Kachur and as epistle reader was Liddy Hilderman. Members of the UCWLC participated in an honour guard. The interment took place in the Garden of St. Luke at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Courtney Kachur, Steve Will, Liddy Hilderman, Craig Hilderman, Logan Kachur and Joseph Laszlo serving as the casket bearers.
