JOYCE - Mrs. Louise Joyce, late of Calgary, Alberta, formerly of Yorkton, widow of Colin Joyce, passed away on August 12, 2012 at Carewest Sarcee Hospice in Calgary. She was 84 years of age. Mabel Louise Chernoff was born on the family homestead near Mikado, Saskatchewan on November 29, 1927 to Mike and Molly Chernoff. She grew up on the family farm along with her three siblings and attended Zukunft Rural Elementary and High School. After graduation, Louise moved to Regina where she trained as a nurse at the Grey Nuns (now Pasqua) Hospital. Upon completing her training, she worked for a short time at the Kamsack and Canora Hospitals. She then moved to Rochester, Minnesota to pursue further training, and worked in the hospital associated with the Mayo Clinic. Her speciality was in the Department of Heart and Lung Surgery. She married Ralph Scherschel in September of 1955, and they were blessed with a son, Steven, on December 19, 1957. They settled in Indianapolis, Indiana where she continued her nursing career. Upon the end of her marriage, she and Steven moved to Yorkton in 1963. She nursed at the Yorkton Union Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit and the Operating Room for 23 years. In April, 1982 she was united in marriage to Colin Joyce and settled down to life on the farm. She loved living in the country and created a beautiful yard full of trees, shrubs and flowers. Her yard attracted many birds where she loved having coffee and listening to the doves. She claimed that their yard was the most beautiful place in the world to her. Indeed it was so beautiful that they won a landscaping award. Upon retirement, she and Colin moved to a townhouse in Yorkton, and later to the Bentley Retirement Community. Colin passed away in 2011. Louise then decided to move closer to her grandchildren in Calgary. Her happiest times were spent with her husband Colin, Steve, Linda and grandchildren. She really looked forward to the memorable annual "Shishliki" reunions at her parents' farm and later at their farm. Her greatest pride and joy were her son Steven, daughter-in-law Linda, and her grandchildren Brent, Bryce and Erika. She often said her life was filled with so many friends and relatives who loved and supported her. Surrounded by her loving family, she passed away after a short, but courageous battle with cancer. Louise was predeceased by her husband Colin, parents Mike and Molly, her brother-in-law, Nick Stooshinoff, her niece, Brenda Chernoff, and her great niece, Erin Tisserand. She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life, her son Steven (Linda), grandchildren Brent, Bryce, and Erika, sisters Marion Stooshinoff, Annette (Ron) Propp, brother Lawrence (Shirley) Chernoff, and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held on Friday afternoon, August 17, 2012 from Westview United Church in Yorkton with Faye Greer officiating.
