Obituary of Alice Moroz

MOROZ - Alice Moroz (nee Robertson) of Yorkton and Sheho passed away on March 23, 2013 at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina. She was 97 years of age. Alice was born on her Grandfather Robertson's farm near Owen Sound, Ontario on April 19, 1915. She moved with her parents and brother Cecil to the new family farm 4 miles west of Liberty, SK in 1916. Alice was an excellent student and despite the rigors of the great depression, graduated from Normal School in Moose Jaw in 1937. She attended Ridge Hill Public School (a one room schoolhouse) for Grades 1 through 8, took Grades 9 and 10 by correspondence, worked for her room and board in Liberty for Grade 11, and with sister Gladys, worked light housekeeping in Imperial for Grade 12. There wasn't much leisure time when you were a farm girl in the Dirty Thirties but Alice loved Scottish highland dancing and playing softball, often walking the 4 miles to town to not let down the team. Alice's first 3 years as a teacher were at one room country schools, so she was pleased to accept a teaching position at Sheho's four room public school in 1941. There she met Peter, who was starting his mink ranching business, and whom she would marry on October 11, 1942. When son Don was born on VE Day, Alice became a "stay at home mom". Daughter Marilyn arrived in March, 1952. Alice was very active in community affairs, based on her love of education and teaching. She was a staunch Monarchist and was President of the local I.O.D.E chapter for many years. But her first love was the Junior I.O.D.E chapter that she founded and nurtured. Over the years this positively influenced the lives of many young girls in the Sheho area. She was a member of the Legion Women's Auxiliary. Whether it was March of Dimes, Easter Seals, Christmas Seals, the Library Bookmobile, or local correspondent for the "Foam Lake Review", Alice was ready to volunteer. She was an active member of the Sheho United Church - organist, Sunday School principal, and fundraiser. When the Church in Sheho closed they attended the Theodore Church where Alice sang in the choir. How she loved the Easter Cantata! Even after moving to Yorkton in 2000, they would make the drive to Theodore every Sunday. During their retirement years Alice and Peter travelled the world - USSR and Ukraine, Australia and New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii, Europe (her favourite trip was to Pitlochry, Scotland, home of the Robertson Clan), the Bahamas, the USA (they did the Yukon/Alaska drive twice), and all the Canadian provinces. Alice was a gifted amateur painter and enjoyed quilting, needlepoint and knitting. She loved flowers and every year the beds around the house in Sheho were overflowing with colourful blooms. When the curling rink opened in Sheho in the 1950's, she and Peter took that up as their main winter recreational activity. Her favourite games were Scrabble, Yahtzee and Rummoli. Her children and grandchildren all have wonderful memories of games nights around the kitchen table with Grandma. Predeceased by her loving husband of 68 years, Peter, her parents Lena and Philip, her brothers Clarence and Cecil, and sister June. Survived by her sisters Gladys Kelly and Grace Booker, son Don and daughter-in-law Joanne, daughter Marilyn, and grandchildren Jill Ellis, John Moroz, Heather Worts, David Werbowetsky, and Allison Crashley. Also survived by her great-grandchildren Mikayla, Tanner and Campbell Ellis, Andrew and Mackenzie Worts, and Lillian Crashley. The funeral service was held on Saturday, April 20th, 2013 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Faye Greer of the United Church of Canada officiating. Daughter Marilyn read the 23rd Psalm, son Don and granddaughter Allison gave family tributes. Pianist, Thelma Gillis led members of the choir and the congregation in the singing of the hymns 'Softly & Tenderly, Jesus is Calling', and 'All Things Bright & Beautiful'. The choir sang the processional hymn 'Make Me A Channel of Your Peace', the recessional hymn was 'Go Now in Peace', and the choir anthem was 'In the Garden'. The interment took place in the Garden of Gethsemane with John Moroz, David Werbowetsky, Glen & Garth Booker, David Kelly and Brett Crashley serving as the casketbearers. Memorials were to the Legion Poppy Fund or to the Theodore United Church. Arrangements were entrusted to Bailey's Funeral Home.
