LAZURKO - Mr. Harry Lazurko, beloved husband to Rose and father, grandfather, great grandfather (Gido), brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend to many passed away on March 20, 2014 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre with family at his side. He was 97 years of age. Harry was born on Feb 12, 1917 in the Theodore district, the son of Michael & Agetha (nee Machuha) Lazurko. He attended Caldervale School finishing his grade 3 and self-taught to read and write in English and Ukrainian. On July 30th, 1949 he married Rose Zahayko. The couple recently celebrated 64 years of marriage. Harry's career was farming although he had many skills and interests. These included reading, carpentry, gardening, mechanics, and fishing when there was time. He enjoyed visiting, card playing, and watching a good hockey game or other sports on the television. He was active in the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Willowbrook and later in Yorkton volunteering on the church council and volunteering his time on many renovation projects for the church community. He had a busy lifestyle operating a mixed farm. He took Sundays off to attend church in Willowbrook and visit with family and friends. Harry was a quiet, but observant man who was devoted to his family. He was always ready to give a helping hand where needed. He was a patient teacher with his sons showing them how to build something, or fix a piece of equipment, or tinker with a car. He built his home and barn, as well as houses for several family members who wanted his help. Harry & Rose farmed in the Willowbrook district until 1982. They continued to live on the farm until 1998 at which time he moved to Yorkton where they purchased a home next door to his mother-in-law Mary. While there he helped care for her, her home, and the yard until she passed away in 2011. Harry is predeceased by his parents Michael and Agetha, sisters Nettie and Mary Lash, brothers Fred, John, and Steve (and sister-in-law Margaret). He leaves to mourn his passing and celebrate his life: his devoted wife Rose, his children Larry & Susan (nee Winkelman) of Regina, Leon & Carmie (nee Schick) of Saskatoon, Dwayne & Dianne (nee Rains) of Chestermere, AB. His grandchildren: Stephen (Angie), Blake (Natalie), Tania (Lee) Schmidt, Kristi (Troy) Dekker, Bryce (friend Kristine), Brandon & Kyle. Great Grandchildren: Kieran & Aria Lazurko, Chance & Jaxon Schmidt, Brooklyn & Xavier Dekker. He is survived by his only remaining brother Paul (Elsie) of Yorkton; sisters-in-law Elsie, Fred's Mary, and John's Mary. He leaves to mourn numerous nieces and nephews, as well as his "adopted boys" Garnet and Jarvis Mushka whom he helped raise. He was a healthy independent man and was able to travel and enjoy visits with his family well into his 90's. It was only in the past two years that his health began to fail and travelling became more difficult. He will be sadly missed by all those that knew him.
