Obituary of Andrew Sagen

Andrew Sagen was born April 1, 1923 to Mary and Frank Sagen. He was the youngest of 8 children (brothers John, Mike, Pete and Willy and sisters Annie, Jess and Mary). From the time he was 6 months old, he was raised by a single mother. At a young age he declared that he wanted to be a farmer when he grew up, so it was not surprising that he quit school after grade 8 to help on the farm. In 1943, at the age of 20, he took over the family farm. When he was 14, his mother was contacted by Jehovah's Witnesses and this implanted in him another love - that of the truths found in the bible. At the age of 19, he was asked to oversee the fledgling Farrerdale Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses although he would not be baptized until June 21, 1943. On July 25, 1947 he married Jean Hulm and they worked together serving Jehovah zealously while continuing to farm. Andrew and his brothers, Willie and Mike, lived in close proximity and farmed together. They worked well as a team and were very successful farmers. As much as Andrew loved farming, his dedication to his god Jehovah remained forefront and he was known to rarely miss a meeting regardless of what was going on at the farm - whether seeding or harvest. He put kingdom interests first and saw the blessing for it. (Matt 6:33,34) In 1964, Andrew and Jean opened their home to Irene Rask (Kreba) after the death of her parents. Although they never had children of their own, Irene was like a daughter to them and remained an important part of his life right until the end. After 36 years of marriage, he lost his dear wife Jean in death August of 1983. On June 16, 1984 he married Kay Kreba. They were married for 24 years until Kay passed away in October of 2008. For the first few years of their marriage Kay and Andrew remained on the farm, but in 1993 they picked up the house and moved to Yorkton. Andrew couldn't quite give up farming yet, so for a couple of seasons he continued to work with local farmers, lending his years of experience. While he did eventually retire from farming, Andrew never retired from his ministry as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. In a conversation with his granddaughters the night before he died, he expressed satisfaction with the choices he had made in life, in the forefront his years spent in service to his God, Jehovah. He urged both granddaughters to "hold onto the truth" and to look forward to when they would all be reunited together in the promised paradise. (Acts 24:15; Revelation 21:1-5; Psalms 37:29) His faith was strong to the end and he could go to rest knowing that he had "fought the fine fight of the faith to the finish".
