Obituary of John 'Jack' Lupescu

LUPESCU - John Howard Lupescu, or Jack as everyone knew him as, was born on July 7, 1927 on the family farm south of Jasmin (19-25-12-West 2nd), the youngest of five children born to Alexander and Sophia (nee Todas) Lupescu. He was raised on the family farm and attended St. Joseph de Dauphinais School. Upon the death of his father in 1940, he and his older brother Bill took over the family farm. They raised foxes, cattle and other farm animals, along with their mixed grain operation. His son James continues to farm the homestead today. On November 26th, 1957 he was united in marriage to Joyce Park at Regina. Together they raised five children: John Robert, Connie Frances, James Alexander, Colleen Bernadette and Candace Marie. They also have five grandchildren: Daniel, Hilary and Michael Nelson and Joshua and Joel Stewart. Jack was a community man. He was a longtime member of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool committees, both in Jasmin and Ituna; a member of the Fire Protection Association Board; member of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Heinrich Boels council #5320; a faithful member of both Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Jasmin and Sacred Heart Church in Ituna. Most importantly, Jack was a family man. He was very proud of all his children and grandchildren. A phone call or a visit from them made his day. Being so young when his dad passed away, Jack learned responsibilities from an early age as his mother, brother Bill and sisters struggled to survive. It is fair to say they started with less than nothing, and because of that it was Jack's strongest desire and his legacy that his children never experience the hardships he did. Together with his wife Joyce and brother Bill, they successfully turned the farm around and were able to provide the education for his children that he had not been able to receive. Jack lived his entire life in Ituna but due to failing health he became a resident of the Ituna Pioneer Lodge in April of 2012. He passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17th at the Lodge with his wife and family by his side. He was 87 years of age. Predeceased by his father Alexander in 1940, his mother Sophia in 1952; sisters: Ann (Sam) Spikula, Margaret (Gerald) Rolph, and Mary Lupescu; his brother Bill; nephew Darrell Spikula in infancy, niece Valerie Herlen and great nephew Erik Herlen. Also predeceased are his in-laws: Clifford and Alice Park; Luella & Belford Rushka; and Tony Kutcher. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Joyce; his five children & five grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, and his many other relatives and friends. Prayers were held on Wednesday evening, October 22, 2014 from Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ituna. Members of the Knights of Columbus attended and led in the rosary service prior to the prayers.The Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Thursday, October 23, 2014 from Sacred Heart Church with Very Rev. Father Boris Kyba C.Ss.R. as Celebrant. Cantors, Wayne Boczulak, Heidi Spilchak & Ladmer Moskal led in the singing of the responses. Cecil Krywulak was the epistle-reader, and Harry Mandziak was the crossbearer. The interment followed in the Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery with Steve Karkut, Ernie Spilchuk, Terry Korchinski, Ted Semchyshyn, Nick Karkut and Michael Spilchuk serving as the casketbearers. Arrangements were in care of Bailey's Funeral Home.
