SMUD - Mrs. Iris Smud of Yorkton, beloved wife of Mike Smud entered eternal life on November 26, 2014 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. She was 69 years of age. Iris Anne Smud was an angel sent from above; a compassionate woman who always went out of her way to help others. Her generous nature endeared her to everyone she knew, often forming lasting friendships. Iris was born on July 28, 1945, in Canora, SK, to Steve and Marie (nee Danyluk) Chalus. She grew up on a farm outside of Canora with four siblings. After finishing high school, Iris worked in town. On May 13, 1964, Iris married the man who was her life, Mike. She took her marriage vows seriously and with unwavering love, walked hand-in-hand through better or worse, in sickness and in health, until death did they part. Iris and Mike started their married life in Preeceville, SK and began their family with two daughters. They moved to Thompson, MB in 1968, and soon after completed their family with the birth of a son. Iris supported and loved her children unconditionally. Later, her grandchildren were to be recipients of the same. Primarily, Iris was a stay-at-home mother, a `job` she relished with pride. Iris was a great cook, seamstress and crafter. Her artistic finesse shone through these talents. Once the youngest child started school, Iris went to work at the Coop Food Store and the Thompson Citizen newspaper until Mike retired from Inco and they moved to Yorkton in 1994. Iris instilled many traditional values into her family-good manners, respect, good moral values, patience, and a deep-rooted faith in the Lord-values that have made her children who they are today. Maintaining the Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian Catholic faith was important to Iris. Iris had been an actively involved member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women`s League for 41 years. She held many branch executive positions, and contributed her time to catering, church cleaning, concessions, and Meals on Wheels. Gardening was also an important activity for Iris, fulfilling a need to help provide for her family. Even in Thompson, her perseverance resulted in a small lot of hearty vegetables. The garden in Yorkton yielded days and days of canning that her children would more than gladly take home. Iris enjoyed going to dances with Mike and playing cards. Iris` claim to fame was being the family historian. If anyone wanted to know anything about anyone, just ask Iris. She was also known for her organizational skills. Iris Anne Smud was predeceased by her parents, parents-in-law, Wasyl and Nellie (nee Hydamaka) Smud, and her brother-in-law Richard Kozun. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 50 years, Mike; children -Donna (Lorne) Hopkins of Thompson, MB and Brenda (Douglas) McCannel of Calgary,AB; and William (Marie) Smud of Thompson; grandchildren-Cody Hopkins, Joshua and Jessica Smud, all of Thompson; sisters-Katherine (Walter) Antoniw of Winnipeg, MB Sylvia (Orest) Romaniuk of Allan, SK and Phyllis Kozun of Canora, SK; brother-Metro (Janice) Chalus of Yorkton; sisters-in-law-Myrtle (Sinclair) McKenzie of London , ON, Rose (Don) Mitchell of Winnipeg, MB and Evelyn (Edward) Venne of Selkirk, MB; aunt-Eva Lozinsky of Stenen, SK, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and life-long friends.
