Obituary of Effie Filipchuk

FILIPCHUK - Mrs. Effie Filipchuk, formerly of Yorkton and the Hamton district entered eternal rest on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Esterhazy Centennial Special Care Home. She was 103 years and 10 months of age. Effie was born on March 29, 1911 in the Rhein district of Saskatchewan, daughter of Peter and Pearl (nee Achtymichuk) Klewchuk. She was raised on the family farm and attended Oleskow School. On February 11, 1934 Effie was united in marriage to John Filipchuk at the Boychuk Church in the Rhein/Hamton District. The couple resided on the farm in the Hamton district until 1950 when they moved to Yorkton to take up part time residence. John and Effie continued farming until John's retirement. They were members of Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton. Effie lived in her own home in Yorkton on Third Avenue until 2007 when she moved to Heritage Heights Lodge and remained there until February, 2014 at which time she moved into the Esterhazy Care Home. Effie was a very loving mother and grandmother who always treasured spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed baking and cooking for family and friends and was a fabulous cook. Her other favourite pastimes were gardening, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She leaves to mourn her passing and to celebrate her life her daughter Dianne and her husband Graham Fishburne of Cobble Hill, BC; grandson Sheldon Scott of Duncan, BC; granddaughters Stephanie Fishburne of Edmonton, AB and Rebecca Fishburne of Victoria, BC and a great grandson Mathias Scott of Duncan, BC. Effie was predeceased by her husband John; daughter Gladys Scott; brothers Bill, Tom, Nick, John and Sam and sisters Ann, Martha, Mary and Maggie. The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky officiating. The responses were led by Gerald Yaholnitsky & parish choir members. The crossbearer was Betty MacDonald. The interment took place in the Garden of Crucifixion at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Mike Oystreck, Wes Supena, Jeff Shupena, Ernie Shupena, Raymond Shupena and Richard Shupena serving as the casket bearers. Following a memorial luncheon Graham Fishburne shared touching words of tribute. Eternal Memory! Vichnaya Pamyat!
