Obituary of Fred Windjack

WINDJACK - Mr. Fred Windjack of Birch River, Manitoba, formerly of Theodore passed away on March 19, 2015 at the Swan Valley Health Centre. He was 80 years of age. Fred was born on February 19, 1935 at Theodore, SK to Wasyl and Katrina (Katherine) Windjack nee Bilokreli. He attended Westbrook School but did not go to high school. Fred worked on the family farm almost all his life until he slowly retired over the past approximately 15 years. Fred worked on the farm but his real love was mechanics and repair of machinery and vehicles. He dedicated much of his life to this favourite subject of mechanics. He took courses and obtained certificates and diplomas for these programs in spite of not have even having a high school education. He often worked at various garages and shops in the winter, and farmed in the summer. After 1995 he began spending the winters helping his widowed sister in Birch River, MB and eventually stayed with and cared for her full time when she suffered health problems and could not live alone. Fred is predeceased by his parents Wasyl and Katherine, and also by his sisters Helen and Irene, as well as brothers in law Nick, Ed and Emil. Fred never married and has no children but leaves behind loving sister Victoria (Emil) Platz, their children Ernie, Melvin, and Shirley. Brother Alex, his children Nadia, Ivan, Richard, and Sheldon. Fred is also survived by his twin sister Lena (Ed) Weinzierl and their children Donald, Marlene, Kathy and Wesley. In addition there are numerous great nephews and nieces. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, March 30, 2015 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Very Rev. Mel Slashinsky officiating. The responses were led by Gerald Yaholnitsky and Holy Transfiguration choir members. The interment followed in Holy Ascension Parish Cemetery, Westbrook with Ivan Windjack, Ernie Platz, Melvin Platz, Shirley Leggett, Bev Leggett and Wade Windjack serving as the casket bearers.
