Obituary of Effie Irene Skene
SKENE - Effie passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 10, 2015 at the Broadview Centennial Care Home with family at her side. Effie (nee Bigg) was born on August 6, 1927 to parents Ethel (Clark) and John Bigg of Deveron, Sask - 8 miles south of Summerberry. She lived with her mother's sister and brother, Mary and David, on the Clark homestead and attended school until grade 10. She boarded in Wolseley, graduated from Wolseley High School and then continued her education at Teacher's College. Her first job was teaching at Cotham School in 1946. She stayed for 2 years and during that time, met and began courting Jim Skene; then she returned home to teach until July 27, 1949 when Jim and Effie were married. They farmed with Jim's brother, Andy, until 1977 when they retired to their acreage on the outskirts of Dubuc. Effie was a devoted wife, an accomplished seamstress, a modest pianist, a wonderful cook and, although she did some gardening, it was the flowers that she really loved. . She was predeceased by her husband, Jim (Dec 2005); parents, Ethel and John Bigg; her brother, Bert, and his wife Mary; Aunt Mary Clark and Uncle David Clark. Also, by Jim's family: parents, Jean and Robert Sr; brothers, Andy (2003), Freddy, Bill, Bob (Winnie), Ed; sister, Irene (Clarence) Andersen; and brother-in-law, John Huber. Effie leaves to mourn her passing, her sisters-in-law: Betty Huber and Dorothy Skene, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. The funeral service was held on Thursday, May 14th 2015 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with her niece, Rev. Susan Robinson of the United Church of Canada officiating. Effie's niece, Vivian Talbot gave a tribute to her on behalf of the family members. Pianist, Amanda Buhler led the congregation in the hymns 'Precious Lord, Take My Hand', and 'Just A Closer Walk With Thee'. Soloist, Kathy Stokes sang 'In the Bulb There Is A Flower'. The recessional was 'Have Thine Own Way'. Honorary bearers were Betty & Alan Willway, Iris Groseth, Pauline & David Sefton, Charles Johnson, Audrey Nielson, Frances Marshall, Sharon Tabbernor, Pat & Milton Criddle, and Daphne Hedstrom. Members of the Rebekah Lodge attended the service and Betty Willway & Sharon Tabbernor performed the Rebekah Lodge tribute service.The interment took place in the Garden of St. Matthew with Mervin Andersen, Shane Talbot, Garth Pugh, Gavin Pugh, Larry Stradeski and Malvin Zimmer serving as the casketbearers.
