Obituary of Stan Kyba

Born in Dneiper (Rhein District), Saskatchewan to Anthony and Stephania (Yurkiw) Kyba, Stanislaus Gabriel Kyba was baptized at the Church of the Holy Transfiguration in Dneiper, Sask. Stan is survived by son Kevin Sutton and granddaughter Erica Miller. He was the oldest of six surviving children, Father Boris, Nestor, Joanna, Paul and Cornelia. He was predeceased by his wife Eileen Sutton, parents Anthony & Stephania and a sister Marie in infancy. Stan attended Cedric School #2342 in the Dneiper district, then took his high school education in Yorkton at St. Joseph's College. Owing to his early family life, Stan faithfully attended church services wherever he lived. He was an upstanding example to those who knew him well or even as an occasional acquaintance. His service to the church by tending to the needs of many on behalf of the church is an outstanding illustration to others of the spirit of the Gospels. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law in 1959, he moved to Melville, and began practicing law with Peter Dielschneider. In 1961 he moved to Rosetown and later to Canora. Stan served as the Secretary/Treasurer for the St. Henry's Roman Catholic School District in Melville as well as the Rosetown Separate School Board. Stan was initiated in the First, Second and Third Degrees of the Knights of Columbus in 1959 and in the Fourth Degree in 1961. He transferred to Yorkton in 1964 becoming the Grand Knight of the Fr. Delaere Council from 1966-1967. Stan joined the St. Volodymyr Branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada in 1969. During the 1960's, the Government of Canada launched a cost-to-coast discussion of multiculturalism. Stan helped prepare a brief on the subject from the point of view of the Ukrainian community. In that time (1963) Stan commenced practicing law in Yorkton, taking over the practice of Mr. Justice A.M. Kindred. In the latter part of the decade, he joined the Yorkton Rotary Club. From 1965 to 1973 Stan served on the Yorkton Ukrainian Catholic and Roman Catholic School Board. He donated a great deal of his time giving legal advice and services to the Christian Brothers' private Catholic high school, St. Joseph's College. As well, he was instrumental in reaching an accord with Yorkton Collegiate Board for the provision of wages for the Christian Brothers and Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate. In Manitoba, he served as Chair of the Board of Regents for St. Vladimir's College in Roblin, Manitoba. Stan was joined happily in marriage to Eileen Sutton on August 21, 1974. She died only 12 short years later. From 1983-1988 Stan was a member of the St. Mary's Parish Ukrainian Catholic Cultural Centre Board. He served the parish of St. Mary's and the Yorkton Redemptorists in very substantial ways by helping reduce unfair taxes levied upon the Centre. He also contributed to those savings by donating numerous years of legal advice and work. Stan served as Chair for the Saskatoon Eparchial Central Committee from 1992 to 1994. A great sense of stability and hope in church organizations was given to the faithful because of his leadership. As a result, meetings were notably well attended. Stan selflessly served as a member of other organizations and the parish of St. Mary's in various other capacities, including St. Joseph's College Reunion Committee (1997-2000); Chair of the Building committee for St. Mary's Parish; Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate 100th Anniversary. In 2006, Stan's greatest recognition for service to the community and church came in the form of the Papal Award from Pope Benedict. It was over 40 years since that accolade was bestowed on a Saskatchewan resident. Stan's dedication in bringing Christian values to civil institutions includes Liberal Candidate for MLA of Canora Constituency (1971); Liberal Candidate for MP - Yorkton-Melville Constituency (1974); Alderman for the city of Yorkton (1982-1985, 1988-1994).
