Obituary of Dennis Erwin Engel

ENGEL - Mr. Dennis Engel, beloved husband of Sonia of Yorkton passed away on Sunday, February 14th 2016 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre following a three year battle with cancer. He was 66 years of age. Dennis Erwin Engel was born on October 8, 1949 at Yorkton, Saskatchewan; the oldest of seven sons born to Viola (nee Ruf) and Alfred Engel. Dennis was raised on the family farm in the Stornoway district. As a young man, Dennis moved into Yorkton, where he began a construction business but also continued farming. As time went on he found it difficult to do both so he began working for the Marchinski Lumber Company, as a buyer/estimator. On October 25th 1975 he was united in marriage to Sonia Miko at Norquay. Following the marriage the couple made their home in Yorkton. In 1982 Dennis & Sonia opened a bakery in the city, which they successfully ran until 1990, when the business was sold. Following a period of time off Dennis & Sonia opened up a new venture in the city, Denson Commercial Food Equipment, which still operates today. Being a very hard working individual, Dennis built the business from the ground up, and had established many good relationships with his client customers throughout western Canada. Despite being ill, he still managed the company up until recently. His other love was horticulture, he grew many varieties of flowers over the years, the back yard of his home was a show place of color & variety during the summer months. Travel was another passion, as Dennis and Sonia made regular trips to many destinations such as Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, Mexico & California. He was predeceased by his father Alfred and a brother Roy. He leaves to mourn his passing and to celebrate his life his wife Sonia; mother Viola of Vernon, BC; brothers: Robert (Shirley) of Burgis Beach, SK; Brian of Vernon BC; Bruce (Lorna) of Ottawa, ON; Darryl of Rhein, SK; and Greg of Vernon, BC. Also numerous nieces, nephews and his many other relatives and friends. A prayer service was held on Monday evening, February 22nd 2016 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre. Cremation took place following the prayers. The memorial service was held on Tuesday, February 23rd from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Crystal Bailey B.Th. officiating. Tributes to Dennis were given by RoxAnne Dionne and Cindy Onofreychuk. Musical selections were 'Jesus Take My Hand' by George Jones, and 'I Want to Stroll Over Heaven With You' by Alan Jackson. Soloist, Donna Toffin sang 'Why Me Lord'. Honorary bearers were Bill Simpson, Marvin Broney, Derrick Dionne, Catlin Olynyk, Stefan Lindal, Pat Burns, Nick Yanko and Perry Grodzinski.
