Obituary of Lawrence Skoretz
SKORETZ - Mr. Lawrence Skoretz of Yorkton, beloved husband of Joanne passed away September 13, 2016. Lawrence was born June 4, 1949 in Invermay, SK. He is the eldest of Adam and Irene (Yerema) Skoretz. His early years were spent on the family farm, north of Buchanan. He started school in Mikado. In 1959, the family moved to Buchanan where he continued his school and graduated in 1967. Lawrence graduated from the U of S in 1971, with a Bachelor of Commerce, and started his first job as Secretary-Treasurer with the Canora School Division. He was active in the church group, CYMK, as an advisor where he met the love of his life, Joanne (Cipywnyk). Lawrence and Joanne were married July 26, 1980 in Brooksby, SK. They have 4 children, Evan, Melanie, Christine, and Michael. Lawrence, Joanne and family purchased their cabin in August of 1987, at Burgis Beach. They share and continue to spend every free weekend and summer together as a family, making many of Lawrence's favourite memories. The family moved to Kamsack in 1988, where Lawrence worked as a Town Administrator for five years. He worked briefly at the Saskatchewan Curling Association. He worked and lived until his retirement in Ituna, as the Town Administrator. After a brief retirement, Lawrence worked as the Administrator at the Ilarion Residence in Saskatoon. From there, he moved as the Administrator for the Village of Theodore. He was always involved in the community wherever he lived. His interests were government, politics, being involved with the elected Local School Board, where he assisted in the development of the Horizon School Division, Local Town Councils, SLGA, Elections Canada, various church activities, and volunteering (even as a local firefighter). His true passion was spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed skiing, boating, fishing, dancing, travelling the world, being part of Drama Clubs, Curling Teams, and the Choir. Lawrence and Joanne moved to Yorkton to enjoy their retirement. Unable to sit idle for long, he began working part-time with the Yorkville Public Utility Board. Lawrence was a very positive and easy going person and loved to socialize with his family and friends. He always enjoyed being around people and was so proud of his family. He loved to share his family's accomplishments and successes. The respect and pride he had for those he loved could be heard in his voice and seen in his actions. Lawrence is lovingly remembered by his wife of 36 years, Joanne, and their children, Evan (Krista Creguer), Melanie (Grant) Bartzen and their "soon to be" grandson, Christine (David) Bernakevitch, and Michael. Lawrence's father, Adam, brothers and sisters, Boris, Zane (Larise), David, Holly Stasiuk, Twyla (Larry Nelson), Cynthia, Lesia (Grant) Gardiner, Barb Cipywnyk, Terry (Amy) Cipywnyk, and Ted (Cherry) Cipywnyk, numerous aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Lawrence is predeceased by his mother, Irene, Mother and Father-in-law, Mary and Peter Cipywnyk, brother-in-law, Larry Cipywnyk, sisters-in-law, Heather Skoretz and Diana Skoretz. Prayers were held on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at and the Funeral Service on Monday, September 19, 2016 at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton with very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky and Very Rev. Archpriest Taras Makowsky officiating. The responses were led by Yvonne Panchuk & Parish Choir Members. The cross bearer was Terry Shinkewski and the banner bearers were Jim Shinkewski and Farron Mayne. The interment took place in Canora Town Cemetery with Dale Skoretz, Adrian Yerema, Trevor Yerema, David Yerema, Shane Yerema and Richard Yerema serving as the casket bearers. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Lawrence to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church as gifts of remembrance.
