Obituary of Peter Yanko
Peter Yanko died peacefully with his family by his side at the Wascana Grace Hospice in Regina on September 19th, 2017. Peter was born in the Campbell town School district north-east of Kelliher; to parents Fred and Mary Yanko. He received his education at the Campbell town School about 2 ½ miles from his home. Many stories were handed down about the events of those days, many of which were quite humorous. Common to this era Peter only attended school to the 6th grade, as there was work to be done on the farm and school was not a priority. On October 19th 1952 Peter married Sophie Mandziak and they began their lifetime career of farming. On September 10th 1953 a son Dennis was born. They worked very hard on this mixed farming operation which also involved milking as many as 15 cows all be hand every morning and night. They worked as a team and although the work was hard and the days were long they always had time for company and good conversation. Peter was described as a straight shooter, not afraid to tell it like it was. Peter was known to also offer company a drink or two (sometimes more). They loved nothing more than to have their grandchildren stay over. Peter had a heart attack in 1994 and they retired to a home in Kelliher, which they enjoyed until December of 2013, when illness set in and Peter could no longer look after his loving wife of many years. Sophie had to go to a home in Raymore and Peter went to a nursing home in Fort Qu'Appelle. Sophie passed away in May of 2014 and Peter was devastated although he was able to return to his home for the summer months for the following two years. He then moved to the Renaissance Retirement Centre in Regina, so that he could be closer to family. Peter is survived by his son Dennis (Dianne); four grandsons: Jeremy (Jody), Cory (Chandra), Nathan (Lisa), and Ryan (Robin); great grandchildren: Aiden, Colton, Brinna, Max, Ryker, and Benjamin. Step great grandchildren: Miranda, Jacob, Justin and Naya. Brothers: Mike (Winnie), Bill (Barb). Sisters: Kay Sydorko, Nellie Fushtey, and Caroline (John) Moneo; sisters-in-law: Pauline (Steve) Hrynuik, Ann Feszczyn and Natalie Lilley; brothers-in-law: Nick (Peggy) Mandziak, Harry (Pat) Mandziak; and their families. Prayer services were held on Sunday evening, Sept. 24th 2017, and the Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Monday morning, Sept. 25th, all from St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Kelliher. Very Rev. Fr. Bohdan Lukie C.Ss.R. was the Celebrant. Cantors, Bernadette Gabora & Joanne Pidperyhora led in the singing of the responses. Joanne Hrynuik was the Epistle-reader, Colton & Max Yanko were the crossbearers. The interment took place in Sts. Peter & Paul Parish Cemetery at Jasmin with Jeremy, Cory, Nathan & Ryan Yanko, and Trevor & Bryce Mandziak serving as the casketbearers. Memorials were to the Jasmin Catholic Cemetery Fund.
