Obituary of Michal Sereda
Mike Sereda, formerly of Yorkton, beloved husband of the late Emilia Sereda passed away on Monday, April 2nd, 2018 in Saskatoon, having spent his last days surrounded by his family. He was 91 years old. Mike was born on November 18th, 1926 in Ukraine. In 1962, he immigrated to Canada and settled in Yorkton, where he met and married his wife, Emilia. They enjoyed 38 years together. Mike spent most of his working years employed as a baker with Yorkton City Bakery. During this time, he and Emilia raised four children. Never one to sit still, he also kept himself busy by fixing things around the house (often in the most creative ways imaginable), tending the yard, and helping Emilia with the garden. Mike's retirement gave him the time to pursue many more interests. He continued to take care of his house and yard, often with the help of his son, Johnny, in his later years. When Johnny moved back to Yorkton, Mike would come to his house, watch him work on cars, and play with his cats. He would sit in the sun and continue to move his chair to stay in the sun to the point where one could almost tell what time it was by the placement of his chair. He loved fishing with his friends and daughters, Sonya and Tanya. He travelled to various places, including a trip back to his home in Poland. Mike was also thrilled to visit and get a behind-the-scenes tour of the RCMP Academy in Regina where Christine works, afterwards proudly wearing his RCMP hat wherever he went. He became a devoted Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, often explaining to everyone why they lost a particular game. He had tremendous fun at all the family gatherings, including those at the Wosminity farm. He also had a lifelong love of animals, feeding the wild birds and deer that came into his yard, and taking care of his cherished cats, Kara, Shelby, Maggie and Molly, and his daughters' dogs, Roxy and Cooper. Mike spent his last year and a half living between the homes of his daughter, Sonya, and his other daughter, Tanya, and her family in Saskatoon. It was during this time that he was given the opportunity to spend precious time with his grandchildren, Carson and Aiden. He played street hockey with them, and watched them swim and play ice hockey. He also took great joy in helping his son-in-law, Jason, with his catering business. Mike leaves special memories celebrated by his family: daughter, Christine Hudy, and two grandchildren, Tyler and Brandon, of Regina; son, Johnny Sereda, and daughter-in-law, Karyn, of Yorkton; daughter, Sonya Sereda, of Saskatoon; and, daughter, Tanya Sereda-Wosminity, son-in-law, Jason Wosminity and two grandchildren, Carson and Aiden, of Saskatoon. Mike was predeceased by: his wife, Emilia; father, Dmytro; mother, Katarina; and two brothers, Dmytro and Wasyl. The Funeral Liturgy was held on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Fr. Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Lorne Stechyshen and parish choir members. The cross bearer was William Krywulak and the epistle reader was Peter Moroz. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Johnny Sereda, Jerry Lutz, Darren Blazeiko, Mark Stebner, Cory Wright and Fred Schrader serving as the casket bearers. The family thanks Penny Dyck for her supportive care during the time that Mike lived in Saskatoon. They also thank the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon for the wonderful care and compassion they gave to Mike. The family respectfully requests donations to the St. Paul's Hospital Palliative Care Unit in lieu of flowers. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com. Christ Is Risen!
