A Memory of a Flower Card
I had brought home a bunch of flowers for my wife, Heather.
Not something, I may add, that I did often enough.
I cannot remember the occasion or even if there was an occasion, but here I am standing in the doorway holding a bunch of flowers.
Heather takes one look at me, puts her hands on her hips, tilts her head to one side and says, “OK, so what do you want?”
” Nothing, I just brought you some flowers” I say smiling.
“Well, you must want something to bring me flowers”
“No, I don’t want anything, I just had the impulse to buy you flowers, OK”
I hand her the flowers and she had a quick look at the attached flower card and reads aloud, “To the Love of my Life”.
“Oh, Oh, don’t think you can sweet talk me Mr O’Neill, I bet you said that to Lois too”
“No, I never did” says I.
“You must be after something”.
And so, the conversation goes back and forth for a few minutes until I say, “Well, do you like the flowers?”
“Yes, they are very nice, thank you.” She says as she puts them in a vase.
Now twenty-one years later, I am going through Heathers things laid out on the bed, she had died from cancer a few months earlier. Among her things was her purse, I tip out the contents of the purse, mainly coins, notes, and a few bits and pieces she carried around in her purse. As I am putting the purse aside, I notice that there is a small side pocket just inside the purse. In this pocket is a small photo of me, twenty years younger. Attached to the photo is a flower card with the title, “To the Love of my Life”.
Over the years Heather had numerous wallets and purses, (she had a thing for them) so she had to have moved this card and photo with each new purse purchase.
This said so much more to me, than words could ever say.
